Any Vols Coming out to California for the Cal Game?

Hello.

One of my Cal friends was nice enough to show me this site. You are all very friendly for the most part. Anyway, I promised myself that when I signed on and made an account for this forum, I would ask a question that has been bothering me for some time. You see, I am puzzled by your performance against Air Force. You should have slaughtered them and yet you nearly lost. What made that game so close?

I understand that a W is a W, and an L is an L, it still shouldn't have been that close though. Many have ventured a guess that the effects of playing a team like Cal may have caused some of this drop off. Does anyone care to explain what happened? GO BEARS!

It happens to many teams every season. A few things happened:

1. Air Force ran the triple option out of the flexbone. John Chavis has been horrendous against the option his entire career at UT. Our defense over pursued on every single play. We were up by 17 with about what - 7 minutes left? We threw an INT and then they recovered on onside kick. The strange thing - the normal finish of that game would have been a UT 24 point victory.

2. We came out flat - we put 100% of our emotions into beating Cal. After big wins teams typically have a letdown. This happens a lot.

3. It didn't help that right after Air Force was Florida. A lot of teams, us included, are guilty of looking ahead.

That's a pipe dream. It was due to overlooking them prepping for UF, a pathetic run D (which made the Marshawn led attack look like a good Pop Warner squad), and some serious good fortune for AF in the waning moments of the game. Beating a pathetic Cal squad might have led to some overconfidence, but that was probably finished by the time AF made their fortuitous comeback.

Judging by the articles flowing after the Cal game declaring your OC god and ainge a heisman lock, me thinks your boys came in a little overconfident.

I said that overconfidence might have been the problem because we mistakenly assumed that CAL was better than AF.

Bigger problem, as was exposed throughout the season (except against that pathetic running game CAL brought to town) was our utter inability to ever stop the run. We had other problems, but that one bit us hard in every one of our losses. Had you guys had any semblance of a line, that might have been the case against us.

First off, I am not even sure how to respond to that comment. So I won't. You guys sure do have cool smilies though! :compute:

I find it a noteworthy coincidence that Cal fans are touting their offensive line as fantastic in 2006 yet they were completely dominated against Tennessee. Mayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyybe SEC > Pac 10

:)

Air Force is better than Cal? :swoon3:

Has your run D gotten any better? We have a boatload of good RB's this yr. Probably a couple with potential exceeding even Marshawns...

cal&

Yeah, we saw some of those "quality" RBs behind Lynch last year. They really ran over us. And yeah, our D should be better, at least the run defense.

Who said the oline was fantastic in 2006? Our o-line was good, not great in 2006. We lost 3 guys to the NFL on the oline in 05 (edit: two of which are starting btw), the two returning senior starters weren't top notch. so every major starter was a newbie against tenn. Despite of this we were 3rd in the country in sacks allowed. Yet our run blocking was mediocre in the beggining of the season and didn't get great until the bowl game. We return 2 first team pac-10 olineman (both who were in their first season starting) and 3 other guys who saw significant playing time in 06. That is why we expect the oline to be great in 2007. Tedford has never not had a 1000 yard rusher btw and we have lots of olineman in the NFL.

Great place to qualify the strength of your O-line is against a stack of PAC - 10 defenses, and I use the term lightly.

Apparently it need not get any better to deal with your stable of backs. As I recall, Lynch was on most preseason all-america lists and looked silly at game time, until our 3rd unit made an appearance and the game was well in hand.

I loved watching him try to run east / west while watching our linebackers chased him down and buried him.

Looking back, I should have been giggling about the fact that I was more worried about Longshore than anyone else on the team.

He kept trying to do these strange jump moves. He'd jump like 3 feet in the air and Mayo would grab him and slam him to the ground. It was hilarious.
