Anyone play guitar?

Bump.

Started playing about 6 months ago. Previous musical experience in strings has helped significantly (Violin/Viola). I have gotten the strumming patterns down and basic chords, next thing will be tab/sheet music reading and more advanced chords/progressions.

Currently own a cheap Alvarez (great sound for the pennies I paid for it 8 years ago), but wanting to upgrade, as it's become a frequent hobby of mine. Been looking at Gibson, Taylor and Martin, but I'm unimpressed with their models below the ultra high-end $3000+ price point, and to be honest, my skillset and budget cannot justify a guitar like that. Started looking at Alvarez again, particularly the Yairi line. Anyone have any experience with those, or know another maker I can look into?

It really depends on what you play when it comes to the guitar.

I've always been an Ibanez guy. What I like about them is that they are affordable and they have what I call a fast neck. I've owned Fender and Gibson but I always go back to Ibanez.

I bought this last year:

I love it. It's not the fanciest guitar but its easy and fun to play and I got it for $700.

Acoustic guitar mfg's are numerous. Try the knock off brands of Fender and Gibson.

I'm an electric Gibson guy, however, I do pick up an acoustic occasionally. Martin and Taylor are the nicest I've heard with a good feel to them, imo.

My $0.02

Taylor makes a great sounding and very playable guitar. You don't have to get into the 81x series to appreciate them.

Well, its been quite some time since I started this thread. I took lessons for a while on my acoustic, but since quit playing and sold it. I just got a Fender strat Squier yesterday as a birthday gift, so I'm going to try and pick it back up again this time with an electric. Anyone have any suggestions on a good amp? I found one I like, called a Fender Mustang

I have an older version of this (different model). Good home practice amp that lets you simulate different amp styles and has effects.

It's a cheap way to find a ton of different sounds without buying a bunch of pedals at first.

Mustang is good for a digital amp. It should give you a bunch of different tones and comes with software to do even more on your computer. I have a mustang III and like it.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I picked around a bit on it last night and it is so much easier to play than the last acoustic that I had, which was enormous

Presently, I have a Vypyr 30w and play thru Garage Band via a Mac Mini. Have had a 10w Fender, 15w Line6, and a 100w Raven head on a Marshall stack.
Too many pedals to mention.

Each one has its own tone. Absolutely loved the tone of the fender 10w.

I have found I like all these amps, my mood determines the amp and effect.

I love to write lyrics. Getting the tune out of my head and into my fingers is the ultimate challenge for me. Although, sometimes, not so fun for wifey:)

Since we're sorta on the subject of amps, I'm thinking about upgrading my current amp, which is a Vox bass amp, I want to get a tube amp and have come across several Peavey valveking models and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with them. I was thinking some type of Fender amp maybe a deluxe reverb but that's out of my price range for now. I'd like to stay under 500.

I had a Fender Vibrolux Reverb Custom (40w twin) for a while. Beautiful tone with natural break up but it weighed a ton and was too damn loud for the house.

I now have a Fender Princeton Reverb 68 Custom (still above your price point) and it's a beauty. Amazing cleans and comes from the factory with several of the standard mods people used to do to these.

They don't make these anymore but they looked fun

Thanks! I'll check those out. I may just wait and save for a used Fender deluxe reverb. The Marshall amp in the video you posted doesn't quite have the sound I'm looking for but I've always been more of a Fender guy.

Me too. Pricey but those Fender cleans and warm overdriven tones are hard to beat.

I also have a Vox AD30vt that has a tube/solid state hybrid and lots of effects/amp models. Not as pure as the Princeton but it's a good little amp. One nice feature is you can adjust the power so you can crank it with the wattage turned down to get the overdrive without busting an eardrum. There's a whole online database of settings to get various band sounds

VOX AD15VT • AD30VT • AD50VT • AD50VT-212 • AD100VT • Chrome serie : 669 presets

sample with sound clip at bottom of the page.

I have an old Fender Blues Deluxe. It has just about the best warm, clean tone I've ever heard from an amp. Some of the Peavey tube amps are really good, especially for the money.
