Anyone play guitar?

I think that Ronnie is a far better player. But Keith owns the brand. Keith has a handful of iconic licks that he created (borrowed from the old blues players). Satisfaction is right up there with Smoke on the Water as far as most famous riffs. Gimme Shelter might be the greatest Rock tune ever written.

Ronnie and Bobby Keys interplay when performing Can't You Here Me Knocking live is hard to beat.

Slide entrants: Duane Allman, Johnny Winter

That would be a long list. Joe Walsh, Mick Taylor, Keith Richards, Don Felder, Elvin Bishop, EC, JP, Jeff Healy are just a few. Probably start off with Elmore James and Muddy Waters. I suppose he's good, but I'm not a fan of George Thorogood.

Thoughts on John Mayer as a guitarist? Imo, the dude can play.

I'll admit that I was going to list him as "underrated," but I was afraid of the backlash.

He's a great blues player, and he has done some really cool fingerstyle acoustic stuff over the years (see, "Neon" et al).

People not familiar with anything but the radio BS (which is a fine way to make an incredible living) should check out his early acoustic albums, his work with the JM Trio, and now his stint with the Dead & Co.

I just watched an entire set from the Dead and Co., and he really does work on the old tunes. Those guys wouldn't choose just anyone to front the group. Would love to see them live.

Holy crap. You guys have come up with some great names. Some of them I have not heard of and will have to listen to. Any ideas on how we can better categorize them?

He’s a decent guitarist, but not a game changer.

Here's some guy's opinion:

On recording three JJ Cale tracks for the Clapton & Friends album:

"He cut all those tracks in about an hour, first or second take."

Best by genre and, possibly, subgenre to include crossovers, maybe?

R&B
Country
Rock
Classical

He can play. He did a show with Brad Paisely and really showed what he’s capable of. But to me he’s almost like a session guy with tons of ability and nothing that really stands out like an Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Page, etc. where you know who it is immediately after the first note.

Mayer is great. One of the all time greats and a pretty good sense of humor from what I've seen.

Anyone mentioned Luther Dickinson yet? That guy can hold his own anywhere he goes.

I remember seeing him on MTV in a bear suit before one of his shows, telling all his fans how bad John Mayer sucks.

Hate half his pretty boy claptrap horse****, but he won me over with that.
