Anyone play guitar?

Underrated: Billy Gibbons, Terry Kath... two players greatly admired by Jimi Hendrix.

Vince Gill is also dang good, but overshadowed as primarily a singer.

Great Tone: Gilmour (obviously) and Robin Trower

Gone before potentially ruling the world: Steve Gaines

Virtuoso (and underrated): Ed King, Joe Walsh

Greatly missed: Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Allen Collins, Ronnie Montrose, John Lennon/George Harrison

Meh: Kurt Cobain

Agree 100%.

Nirvana might have reshaped/revolutionized/ruined (depending on who you ask) rock music, but any schmoe can play Cobain. Heck, he was so wasted most of the time, we can actually play it better than him.

Much better writer than picker. Creative rule breaker.

Page IMO is great as a folk/classical/acoustic player. His electric sound is his own. His greatest skill was possibly as a producer-arranger and a writer.

He was a **** guitarist, but one of a very few guitarist to use feedback to its potential.

Agree on the first category

Agree on the second. Again Clapton is my favorite.

Add George Harrison on the third.

Page gets this rap quite a bit. I think Page is an amazing guitarist. But when I think about Zepplin I don’t think about amazing musicians. Don’t get me wrong they’re all good. But that’s it they all carry their weight. Page isn’t Zepplin. I think more about amazing lyrics/singing and compositions when I think of Zepplin.

Paige's studio work with zep was pretty sloppy, and he was absolutely awful live, more often than not.

But for quite a while he was by far the busiest session guitarist in britain, and most of it was very fine work.

heck the only way I can carry a tune is in a wheelbarrow...I guess I just never followed him that much

Check out Spanish Fly and Little Guitars (Intro). EVH was a bad, bad dude at one point. Ted Templeman (legendary producer that worked with amazing musicians) said that EVH was the most talented musician he ever worked with.

The Edge: has a patented sound, not that impressed with the skill

Ted Nugent: a small body of great work surrounded by a lot of crap

Virtuoso... can play anything and has great taste in what he borrows: Mike McCready

(Kind of the opposite of The Edge... not a real identifiable sound, but it sounds great).

Gotta have Robert Fripp in the viruoso column.

Along with Clarence White.

I forgot about Dickey Betts on my list. He’s probably not on most peoples awesome list but he’s awesome to me. Allman Bros live in concert with Betts just playing and playing and playing... simply put, good stuff.

That's one band I wished I had seen perform live.
