The bicycle road races had some hard moments. In the men's race, two of the lead breakaway threesome crashing in the final downhill, leaving a Polish rider all by his lonesome for the final 30 kilometers. A second breakaway threesome working together rode him down and passed him mere meters from the finish. The Polish rider wound up fourth.

The women's race was deja vu. The lead Dutch rider crashed horribly. A lone US rider had a substantial lead heading toward the finish. She too was reeled in by a threesome working together. All whipped by her to claim medals. She was fourth by less than a bike length.

Just saw the conclusion of the second women's sabre match for Ibtihaj Muhammed (US). Sadly, she lost to her French opponent and is eliminated from the individual medal rounds. She will participate in the team fencing competition.

I saw the last little bit of the women's race. That crash was awful to watch. Then the US rider was awful to watch, oh so close to have it taken away.

I witnessed in person the Netherlands men defeat the Italians in the 1996 Olympics. As much as I enjoyed being among the Dutch fans for that match, I do wish the US women would win out to the gold medal in Rio.

Coaching the US women, none other than Karch Kiraly. Watch TV broadcasts of him playing on the US teams for the '84 and '88 Olympics. Only saw highlights of his Atlanta victory in beach VB.

The announcers keep stating that the Dutch are the tallest people in the world. They are in error. They are announcing a women's court volleyball match. As a population, Latvian women are the tallest in the world. Only Dutch men have that distinction.

The sidelined US team members spontaneously erupt into quick little dances in support of teammates on the court. C'est fantastique!
