Army Soldier refuses to salute flag

99 on the asvab. I was pulled from class and was offered 8k to go to ranger school after AIT. This was in1993

Did you go to Ranger school? I have a question about the Rangers. We have a guy at work who is full if ish. he claims he was a Ranger but he also has no sense of smell. I thought you could not be accepted in the Rangers if you had a disability like that because you couldnt smell smoke, chemicals, etc. Anyone know for sure?

Medical reasons found by dr brown at the Memphis input station wouldn't let me join. It was bs reasons.

I personally know a few rangers though, I would think you have to be 100% functional.

They also tell me rangers get a Rolex upon completion of school. They both had the watches. Neither of them know one another.

Way back lol. I was at Garryowen, which might've been Pelham then.

Way back is right. After the Turtle Farm I went to Howze then after our DMZ tour we moved to Hovey. Not too sure about Pelham or Gary Owen, both sound familiar. I seem to remember that there was an air cav unit down there.

Didn't get south too much, got to Seoul a few times and Osan Airbase. Got to go to the mountaineering school on Chegido Island, that was a blast.

Mine and all of my buddies must have gotten lost in the mail.

These guys may be younger than you hog. I don't know what to tell you. I saw the watches. Are there different types of rangers maybe?

Interesting about the Rolex. I done a little research online and while I couldn't find a definitive answer I did find another board where the same question was asked and some of the military guys on there said they weren't sure either but didn't think someone without the sense of smell would be allowed due to not being able to smell smoke or chemicals.

I know quite a few Rangers and they rock Timex and whatnot. Never heard of the Rolex thing. 7thGV probably has the best answer to give you. I know for a fact you don't get just for completing Ranger school, but I can't speak for what you might get for being in Ranger Regiment. They are two different things.

Maybe that's the answer then. Ranger Regiment.

When I see the one again ( he's the sheriff of a neighboring county) I'll ask him to be more clear.

I rocked a Timex Ironman.

I was never in the 75th so I can't say for sure but in the late 80s early 90s I really doubt the Army was springing for Rolexes for enlisted men.

What's a PT Test? I'm unfamiliar with this terminology being Air Force and all.

:eek:k: Not surprised....

I don't know what the difference was/is between the AF and Army PT tests. We had push ups, sit ups and 2 mile run. I envision the AF being something like a doughnut eating contest.. :)

We rode a bike for the longest time. Then went back to push ups, crunches, 1.5 mile run and a waist measurement. And the scoring was silly. You could meet the minimums in every category and still fail the test since the composite score didn't meet the minimum score needed to pass. Or go below minimum in one area, max the others and still fail.

Like many things in the USAF, we didn't just go overboard with the PT regs, we went full retard.

The old tape test..

I was always overweight for height/age by Army regs, used to do a lot of weight lifting. Had one First Sergeant make me go to fat boy PT even though I was scoring 290s on the PT test and well under body fat for the tape test. He made everyone who couldn't make weight.

That didn't last long.

Actually, it got a little better over time. The original test started docking points if you had over a 32 inch waist for a male. I saw guys maxing their push ups/crunches and smoking the run at sub 9 minutes and still not score perfect because they had a 35 inch waist.

Were they in the Olympics?

I could see maybe SEAL or special forces getting a Rolex.

None of them (Rangers, SF, or Seals) are getting Rolexs from thier respective branch.

If your the winning team in the Best Ranger Competition, you get a set of Custom Colt Gold Cup .45's.

If someone's rocking a Rolex, they shelled out $4-$7K, or bought a fake in Korea.

Fortunately our tape test, height/weight wasn't tied to the PT score.
