As conservatives, do you personally dislike someone for being liberal?

I can handle any political ideaology as long as you can back it up.

However, I try to avoid stupid people on both sides of the aisle.

I like this answer. My daddy and grandaddy said so doesn't cut it for me either.

I just ask that you be able to give reasons. I have a wide spectrum of friends but the common thread is that most are reasonably intelligent (of course some more than others).

My wife was kind of the "that's what my parents believed" person but I challenge her to read and actually figure things out for herself. It's amazing what people really start to believe once they understand the issue. Of course she knows I'm kind of a nut so she now makes sure to get more info than just my word :)

I know exactly what you are saying. My wife's mom and dad (I love them both to death- great folks) make Sean Hannity look like Michael Moore. She wasn't that right, but she was there. I challenged her to answer some questions on a website honestly that indicates political leanings. I know, not exactly scientific, but it serves as a semi-baseline. Those questions made me realize that I was married to a commie. Not really, but compared to most here, I'm viewed as left leaning (I am a moderate dang it..). She made me look like Scott Walker or something. It was eye opening for us both.

I will almost accept the "because Palin's hot and I want to see more of her" answer

If only she wouldn't talk. I LOATHE that accent. Attractive lady no doubt, but her voice (and a lot of what she says) is like 5 million fingernails desperately clawing a chalkboard to me. She has found the perfect outlet for her, IMO. TWITTER. I don't have to hear her voice AND she is limited to 140 characters or something like that.

My friends are all over the political map. If you think someone has character, they have character, and who they vote for and why is not going to be part of that, imo. In fact, some of my friends are probably my friends BECAUSE we don't see eye to eye on things like politics, or religion or what have you. Variety is a good thing.

all i ask if that if you are going to argue politics with me do so with reason. if you are going to talk about my latent racism than i can't be friends with you.

Why not?

Racism comes in a lot of forms and degrees.

There are people who hate another race because they perceive it as threatening to them, or that it unfairly persecutes them. The KKK might be the former, the Black Panthers the latter.

There are people who stereotype. And some do it a lot. Some do it very little. When I play no limit hold 'em poker and there is an Asian woman in the hand who just keeps flat calling any bet, no matter the size, I figure she is on a flush draw, because amateur Asian woman poker players are notorious for chasing flushes. I don't dislike her for it (in fact, I happen to LOVE Asian woman), although it is racist for me to think that way.

I happen to think that a large number of people in this country ascribe traits to other races for the wrong reason. Correlation not causation. Seems many white people think black people are prone to being lazy or criminal. Why? Because black people make up a disproportionate number (relative to their size in the population) of those on welfare or in prison. The explanation for that is, in my view, that they are mired in poverty disproportionately, too. Being poor causes that cycle, not being lazy or criminal.

Just because I believe that someone has made that mistake of getting the cause wrong doesn't mean I don't want to be friends with them. In fact, I hope to convince them I am right on this issue and at least make them hesitate for just a moment the next time they are faced with an opportunity to make the mistake I think they have been making for awhile.

1. you are confusing stereotyping with racism
2. analyze yourself not others. you throw the race card here frequently but you are making massive assumptions and interpretations of someone's intent - something which you cannot know.

At the risk of hijacking Droski's intent let me explain how I see it; if you want to debate Obama's policies then fine but if your backstop is "Underneath we both know you're real issue with Obama is him being black." then person X and I are going to have serious issues.

Seems to me stereotyping is the foundation of racism.

I think most people stereotype, its just a matter of degree. I certainly do it myself. But I try hard to be aware of it and I certainly try very hard not to act on it.

I think there are a handful of members on the board who stereotype a LOT, and do act on it, and feel justified in doing so. I can't believe you wouldn't agree with me on that.

I do think that is a problem for a select few -- joevol, gsvol, maybe a few others.

I wasn't talking about you specifically LG btw.

if i point out all black people are lazy then yes call me a racist. when i say i don't like obama and one says "in my opinion that's your institutional racism speaking" then you have already gone to a point where we cannot have a rational argument.

Well, when I have made such comments in the past it has not been individualized to you -- or at least should not have been and if so I apologize. I would say that about a few others, but not you.

I am suspicious that its behind the scenes with a lot of the most active in the political process on the far right. I know we disagree on that, especially on the Tea Party, but we will have to agree to disagree on that.

Again, if I said or inferred that as to you and bham, for example, I was out of line. Some others, not so much.

for the second time i'm not talking about you specifically, i was answering the subject of the thread.

Don't have any friends that are liberals. Don't hire anyone that would be in a place of power or that I would personally deal with on a regular basis who is one. To be blunt, I avoid them.

How in the world do you know what someone's political ideology is when interviewing them?

Some of this nation's greatest CEOs have been liberals, as properly defined.

At least you are honest about being so close minded:good!:
