Atlanta Braves II

50M ..yikes. Must be nice to have monopoly money. And fans who attend games.

Despite what they say, the gate isn't that important in determining a team's payroll. The Phillies averaged 15,000 fans a game more than the Braves, which adds up to $30m more in revenue. But their payroll was $90m higher. Attendance follows success; you get the attendance you pay for ahead of time, basically. Their ownership is willing to spend whatever it takes to win. The Braves' isn't.

I respect your posts an understand your point. Maybe my post wasn't clear. I wasn't correlating poor attendance with the braves having a lower payroll. I'm aware of our ownership situation. I'm just saying it'd be nice to fill the Ted more than a handful of times a year and with more braves fans than cub fans, cardinals, phillies, etc fans. Our fans suck. We spent a decade not selling out playoff games. Attendance at Game 4 of the NLDS last season wasn't stellar either.

Everyone in Atlanta is a transplant. It's a big city, but there are very, very few people who grew up here and have been rooting for the Braves their whole lives. Add that to a ridiculously inaccessible ballpark and of course attendance is crappy.

I went to a party a few weeks ago and got to talking baseball because the World Series was on. There were several Yankees fans, a couple of Mets fans, a couple of Phillies fans, a couple Red Sox fans, a Reds fan, and maybe three Braves fans including me. At a party in Atlanta. That's just what the demographics here are like. Most people root for the teams where they moved from.

Which is really funny because outside of Atlanta, the whole South is basically Braves fans.

All true and I know..I just said it must be nice to have fans that attend games. The stadium location, traffic, and Marta issues have been beaten to death. And yeah they made really poor decisions.

Thoughts on trading Prado? Any way in hell we make a run at Beltran for LF?

If they get the right deal (and sign a very good utility infielder) they will trade him.

For a one year deal? I'd be okay with it, but I just don't know if he's the answer. Still think they should make a run for B.J. Upton.

TBS really had an impact. I was at a game a couple of months ago and sat next to a guy from Oklahoma. He said he lived 6 hours from Arlington, 6 hours from Kansas City and everybody he knew was either a Cubs or Braves fan.

I was probably 8 or 9 when we finally got cable television. Don't remember my exact age, but it was in the late '80's all the same. That's when I started watching the Braves. I loved listening to Skip and Joe and Pete as much as I liked watching the games, and in those days the commentary was usually more interesting and appealing than the game being played anyway.

WTBS "The Superstation" certainly made a Braves fan out of me.

To injury prone and overpriced imo. Think they can do better

Unless Frank pulls a rabbit out of his hat, our LF next season will be significantly less productive than Carlos Beltran. We've needed a LFer for a decade now, I wish we would get one.

Who was the last good left fielder? Ron Gant? Lol.

Now you've got me thinking . . .

There were those 2 years (maybe 02 and 03?) where Chipper was in LF. And Ryan Klesko was a decent threat for a few years, but other than that it's been a parade of Diaz, Langerhans, Surhoff etc.

Haha BJ Surhoff..that was awesome. How bout Wally Joyner at 1st too?
1st Base is much more of an adventure. The Braves have rolled out some serious trash at 1B. I hearken back to stalwarts such as Julio Franco, Rico Brogna, Scott Thorman, Casey Kotchman, Wes Helms and, yes, Sid Bream.

Scott Thorman was some serious garbage. Not even recycling bin worthy. How about Fick? Robert Fick I think. Didn't we also have Matt Franco? Only team in MLB history with a dueling 1st base/pinch hitting platoon made up entirely of Francos.

I also failed to mention the ghost of Ken Caminiti.

Didn't Sheffield and Brian Jordan play a little left field for the Braves or was Sheffield in right most of his two years in Atlanta?

I thought they both played RF. I know Sheffield did.

Did Caminiti play 1st? For some reason I thought he played 3rd around (before/after/backup) the wonderful Vinny Castilla era.

Right field actually has been pretty good the last decade if you take out Frenchy's 2008-2009.

Left field has been a disaster. Remember when Charles Thomas played well for a half season and we got Tim Hudson out of him? Yeah...:)
