For me, the problem is when people equate him to Ty Cobb because of the hits record.
I hate that as well. Cobb has some of the most amazing statistics. You can always pull out a few gems like:
- At the age of 41 he moves from Detroit to Philly and hits a measly .357 (.440 OBP) in 490 at-bats. Oh, and he stole 22 bases as well. Spikes up, of course.
- Can't ignore the the lifetime .366 batting average and .433 OBP.
- Hit .400+ three times. Finishing within 20 points of .400 six times additionally.
- Successfully stole 83% of base stealing attempts.
- 297 career triples.
- Named on 222 out of 226 ballots, far exceeding the required 75% needed for HOF election (Ruth, Walter Johnson, Wagner, and Mathewson all had lower percentages).
I found this account online to perfectly depict Cobb:
"At the 1947 Old Timers Game in Yankee Stadium, Cobb warned catcher Benny Bengough to move back, claiming he was rusty and hadn't swung a bat in almost 20 years. Bengough stepped back, to avoid being struck by Cobb's backswing. Having repositioned the catcher, Cobb cannily laid down a perfect bunt in front of the plate, and easily beat the throw from a surprised Bengough."
