The support for him among Reds fans was mind-boggling. I was friends with a guy who rooted for the Reds and was incredibly excited about the Rose record, and I was like, "You do know that you're playing a first baseman who hits about .250 with zero power and who can't really even field his position anymore, right?"

I had forgotten that Rose's backup at 1B was Tony Perez. Clearly the Reds had a nostalgia problem.

Most Reds fans I know loved Rose for the way he played the game. He was easy to like in that regard.

And I'm not sure what to make of the overrated argument. Rose had 10 seasons of 200+ hits. That's unreal.

Agree, It is a very bold statement to say He is overrated.

For me, the problem is when people equate him to Ty Cobb because of the hits record.

I hate that as well. Cobb has some of the most amazing statistics. You can always pull out a few gems like:
- At the age of 41 he moves from Detroit to Philly and hits a measly .357 (.440 OBP) in 490 at-bats. Oh, and he stole 22 bases as well. Spikes up, of course.
- Can't ignore the the lifetime .366 batting average and .433 OBP.
- Hit .400+ three times. Finishing within 20 points of .400 six times additionally.
- Successfully stole 83% of base stealing attempts.
- 297 career triples.
- Named on 222 out of 226 ballots, far exceeding the required 75% needed for HOF election (Ruth, Walter Johnson, Wagner, and Mathewson all had lower percentages).

I found this account online to perfectly depict Cobb:
"At the 1947 Old Timers Game in Yankee Stadium, Cobb warned catcher Benny Bengough to move back, claiming he was rusty and hadn't swung a bat in almost 20 years. Bengough stepped back, to avoid being struck by Cobb's backswing. Having repositioned the catcher, Cobb cannily laid down a perfect bunt in front of the plate, and easily beat the throw from a surprised Bengough."

It's amazing to me there are no unanimous mlb hall of famers.

I think they do it out of principle at this point. I would like to know the handful of jackasses responsible though. Hoping Maddux is, but not holding my breath.

He won't be. If anyone is at this point, it makes the ones that weren't look even more weird.

Ichiro has had 10 seasons of 200 hits and he didn't even get started until his career was half over.

When a good percentage of serious baseball fans put him in the same category as great hitters like Eddie Murray and Chipper Jones, that's overrated. Rose was a very good slap and tickle hitter who hung around until he was 45. That's it.

My first memory of Rose was the 1980 World Series when I was 8, so I really have no memory of what he looked like in his prime.... But the numbers do support what you're saying to some degree.

I remember watching him as part of the Big Red Machine when I was a kid. Granted he was in his 30s by then, but he was only the fifth best player on the team. (Behind Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, George Foster, and Tony Perez.) Your comparison to Paul Molitor was a really good one. Once you strip out the chesty sprinting to first on a walk BS, they were basically the same player. Solid first-level HOFers, but nowhere near all-timers.

And all Molitor was was basically Martin Prado with a consistent 20 year career. Good hitters, but these are not exactly the kind of guys who strike terror into the other team's pitchers.

Y'all keep typing Martin Prado and he might make the HOF. think I'm alone on this one, but anyone else want Beltran on a 2yr deal with an option? I'd be elated.

Sounds good. It will give Chipper someone to hang out with on the big DL fail bus.

I'm more than willing to bet Beltran stays healthy in LF. 130+ games.

.300/.385/.525 152 OPS+ last year in two hitting hellholes (stadiums and lineups)

Current semi-heavy rumor is that the Braves offered Jurrjens and Prado for Adam Jones, but that the the Orioles turned it down. If true, both teams are idiots.

Haha I saw that as well, with a pitching prospect included. hoping it was jurrjens or prado.. I don't know how much sense either makes when a prospect is added, much less both. Had to be something coming back with A. Jones.

Jones isn't that much better than Prado as a hitter, and doesn't offer the ability to back up Chipper at 3B, which the Braves will desperately need as long as Jones is around. I wouldn't even trade Prado for Jones straight up -- much less throwing in a starter like Jurrjens in too. Yeesh. I hope like hell the Braves didn't really offer all that.

I'd probably do Jones for Prado straight up but like you say, pretty much a wash. Jones is more athletic.

Bowman reporting we didn't offer prado and jurrjens. I didn't read his article though.
