Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

This is Newton ringing a cowbell at The Egg Bowl when he was committed to State before Auburn went up to 200,000. The guy next to him is said to be his secret agent, Rogers.

"We have been made aware of the allegation. Unfortunately, we cannot comment at this time," Auburn assistant athletic director, media relations Kirk Sampson said. "However, Cam Newton is eligible to play football at Auburn."

Auburn coach Gene Chizik reiterated that during his his Tiger Talk radio show Thursday night.

"Unfortunately, I can't comment on it," Chizik said. "But here's what I can and I will this say very loud and very clear: Cameron Newton is eligible at Auburn University, period. End of story.''

Haven't been on here, but just wondering if anyone's given credit to Billy C for breaking this one 2 weeks ago?

This is what an Auburn friend of mine told me....

He said he spoke with an Auburn Insider...

I've spoken to two very trusted sources on the situation, and both said the following are facts:

* Florida coach Urban Myer, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen and former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond had a telephone conversation recently to discuss the allegations.

* Meyer had an interest in this story getting out and encouraged Bond to do so.

* Mullen told the two he thought they should move on, let it go, regardless of what was being alleged. Meyer said no, that it needed to get out to the media.

* Kenny Rogers, who is alleged to have sought money, is a desperate individual that was trying to get Cam Newton to go to Mississippi State. Rogers has a checkered past that includes an ongoing investigation by the NFL.

TIFWIW

Auburn deflection.

Unless someone comes out and publicly claims to have made a large donation to that church within the next week or so, then Auburn is in for a beating.

I know if I had made a big contribution, and my pastor was suddenly getting drug through the mud, I'd come out to defend him.

From what I've seen (limited to message boards) Auburn fans seem extremely confident nothing is going to happen. More so than us with the hostess issues.

We were really confident that nothing would come of the Albert Means deal.

And I'm pretty sure USC was confident about the Reggie Bush issue going away. We're still confident about the hostesses. Hope we're right about that. At least that didn't involve paying a player.

Think about it. The SEC has been aware of this situation since January and would have not allowed Auburn to play Newton in September if there was anything to this.

The ONLY reason that this is a story is because Urban Meyer threatened to call his bud at the NY Times and run a smear on Auburn and Newton. He did the same thing to our sleezeball last year. But I do think that Auburn and Newton come out smelling like a rose here and Meyer being exposed as the wuss that he really is.

Some sites/people are reporting that 'a source close to the situation' has informed them that Auburn had no contact with the guy whatsoever. Not really sure what that says, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

My opinion on this is that Rogers did try to get the money from Miss St, but tried to get it on his own behalf and the Newtons/Auburn had nothing to do with it.

Rogers is a crook that's already been investigated by the NFL for posing as one of their representatives.

The church thing, I dunno about. Too many different stories floating around about it right now.

Read this guy's own words and tell me that he's not fishy as hell
I help kids get in school. The only thing I was doing is just like every other kid. Cam Newton left Florida, I would try to get in touch with that kid. When I see a name go across the screen, I try to get in touch with that kid to see if he has any opportunities to see if I can help him. That’s pretty much it. That’s how I do things with the kids. The parents will call me and say, ‘Well, I’ve got a kid.’ OK. I get some film. I look at the film to see what I can do. I let them know what level I think they can play on and then we go from there.

Haha, there are obvious omissions to that little explanation-- like how it's worth his while and profitable.
It would have been a lot easier if he had just said, "I try and latch onto high school athletes in an effort to skim money off their recruitment and then do favors and leech onto them in case they make it to the NFL."

Everybody seems to be focusing on Auburn, but this feels a lot like the Bryce Brown situation where the NCAA was after the handler.
