Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

This ^, it's not a business....at least it's not supposed to be and in a "business" the employees usually receive a salary / compensation, in addition to, bonuses or incentives.....using your logic the players or employees should receive due compensation for the "work" being done....thanks for proving my point!

The employees of the universities do. And yes a University is still a "business". they have to make money to keep the doors open. I don't see how anyone could ever consider a student athlete an employee of a school.

They receive food, shelter, a college education, clothing (team gear), and access to national TV exposure on a weekly basis for those with pro potential.

Which of these things aren't "compensation for the work being done"?

I don't know what will happen with Cam but I just heard Thayer Evans on Dan Patrick and he has a boner for the SEC. Pete Thamel from the NYT is on this too. Vol fans should remember him.
Cam maybe guilty as sin but there is some SEC envy going on here too.

Auburn is taking a huge risk by continuing to play Cam Newton

I would say it was suspect why Auburn played him even one game since they knew this investigation has been ongoing since January, basically they put the whole season in limbo.

I believe Auburn was probably told by Cam that no money was exchanged hands with MSU so there was no violation. The problem is now Auburn is part of the mix.

The coach for Auburn better wise up quickly.

What's the risk? The damage, if there is any, has already been done.

Not completely true, universities can self-punish and the NCAA looks at that as a good thing. Self-punishment is the preferred choice. I mean even Tennessee self punished with your B-ball coach.

The school is either cooperating or they are not, they keep on playing him, to me they are not fully cooperating and I am sure the NCAA will look at it like that in the end.

Good point.

They could win a NC before this is settled. (convicted or not)

Or pull him, and lose 2 or 3 games plus a bowl.

If they are in the middle of it (which is yet to be determined) at this point Im not sure they care if the AA takes away the games he played in to this point.

if he took money from auburn or it's boosters the sc sanctions are going to look like a slap on the hand. is this worth a potential NC? hard to say.

Is there really any self punishment that will make for paying a recruit?

I guess the part where Cam Newton will receive a huge signing bonus plus salary next year and he won't be nearly as important to any NFL team as he is to the Auburn Tigers Program this year...for the "work" he's done this year he is severely underpaid.

I think at some point we will see student athletes receive some type of pay and it will be warranted.

I feel it is just ridiculous that Reggie Bush is rebuked of his Heisman for taking some cash but a guy like Lemicheal James at Oregon spent time in jail, is serving 24 months of probation for Choking a woman and is a front runner for the Heisman Trophy....I just can't believe how screwed up priorities are...???

Sure is. I posted it earlier in the thread... an LSU player was found to be getting his apartment paid by a coach last year. HE WAS GETTING PAID. Bet you didn't even hear about it... know why, LSU did an investigation and got rid of both the player and coach. They sat the player on the bench then let him go after the investigation.

Now, if they had continue to play him knowing there is a good chance he was not eligible... it's all on the school. At this point, Auburn has no choice or they will get the super hammer IMHO. Auburn is now trying to play see no evil, hear no evil. They are going to pay extra... watch.

The right thing to do is to pull him. To be honest, that kind of shows what conference he doesn't have in his team to be frank. Auburn has enough to know that he might not be an eligible player.

Since Auburn outbid everybody else, I don't think the MSU allegations matter that much. It only means that Auburn should have much larger concerns about its own conduct in this. Anybody surprised that a school in Alabama would be paying players?

Never heard of that before.

To compare the 2 you have to make a lot of assumptions on the AU involvement.

As to the bold. At this point, (current) they would get hammered either way. The AA will not let it go because they sit him the last 2 games of the year and the post season.

Basically, what is coming out is Cam is getting paid at Auburn, whether this is true or not is yet to be determined but I would say all indications point to "Yes" on the 8-ball.

I don't know why any Auburn fan would not want him to be benched. You are talking a whammy here.

The money trail should be interesting. Apparently the money from the church came from teh brother. I assume someone from auburn (booster or whatever) got it to him to give to his dad. if the brother refuses to submit financial records can the ncaa do anything?

If you continue to play a player that you have knowledge might not be eligible you are going to get punished even more.

Auburn probably was not aware that Cam was getting paid to go to Auburn until last night.

Heard someone talking about this aspect the other day. (Not sure if true) He claimed the IRS could be involved, in which case the AA will stand back until they are through, take that info. and start their own investigation. Not sure if that has or will happen, but its sounds good.
