Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

If you continue to play a player that you have knowledge might not be eligible you are going to get punished even more.

Auburn probably was not aware that Cam was getting paid to go to Auburn until last night.

Thats possible.

If they knew last summer, its a mute point.

i bet some coach on auburn was aware of it. if the dad is asking the msu coaches about it he surely was asking the auburn coaches. only question is whether it was one coach acting alone or goes to the top.

Chiz may not have known, but someone on staff does.
I nominate Trooper.

I bet Auburn plays Cam Newton this week and the rest of the season, until there is enough real substantial evidence to sit him out.

The money trail should be interesting. Apparently the money from the church came from teh brother. I assume someone from auburn (booster or whatever) got it to him to give to his dad. if the brother refuses to submit financial records can the ncaa do anything?

The ncaa doesn't have subpeona power but if you piss them off or give the impression that you are hiding something, they will be up your a$$ like a gerbil at richard gere's house. now the fbi on the other hand can twist your arm if they want to.

Yeah, I don't think there was intent on Auburn up to this point, they were aware of the investigation but it doesn't loo, like they had any info that Cam was being paid to play at AU. That has kind of changed now, now it might end of all being false... my guess it won't but it could.

At this point the AU coach has enough to make a common sense decision based on known information. If the guy was the long snapper he would have never been on the field and the coach would have never took the chance.

If the kid were playing for LSU, I would pull him immediately.

I, like most other posters here, would seriously doubt Auburn would be stupid enough to blatantly shovel the money to the Newtons, but of course the "boosters to church" scenario is possible, especially after those alleged "confessions" from the Newtons.

Any way, I don't give a damm about what Auburn or the Newtons have done. I am just sitting back and enjoying the show.

Make it rain, Cam!

even if he was your key play in a NC run?

Yes. All you are doing is hurting your program long-term. And the NC is going to be pulled and any money you make most probably will be as well.

It's going to suck if it's not true but you have enough info to make a short-term decision. The problem is Cam has no credibility and now it's going to hurt him whether it's true or false.

At this point, they have to play him to keep up the denial.

T beat me to it.

They have played their hand IMO.

Pulling him would be perceived as an admission of guilt. Especially with SEC title and national championship opportunities on the line.

Auburn and Newton have gone the route of denial. There's no turning back on that now...they've got to play him and hope the evidence never surfaces.

Auburn's making the best decision possible at this point...

But deep down I really hope he beats Bama then gets declared ineligible for the SECCG and they lose to Florida/USCjr.

Yea, but with the fbi getting involved it's a whole new ballgame. If they get done interviewing john bond and start looking auburn's way, i'd expect auburn might change their tune. it's one thing to cover your tracks when fines and probation is at stake, it's another when you could be looking at the big house.

I think Bama beats AU @ Bryant-Denny without all this off the field nonsense.

Per ESPN, Cecil told MSU recruiters that Cam's college decision would be about "more than a scholarship."

Hopefully these idiots botched this one so bad we can see some resolution mid-season.

It's their choice. The NCAA will bring down the super hammer when an university turns a blind eye to the situation see USC.

This is Auburn we are talking about. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

There is an old saying that when a middling program starts really knocking down big recruits, there is usually something rotten going on. Auburn has been recruiting like bandits and now we know why.

to be fair, werent those LaMichael James allegations proven false? ... I believe there was a police report that outlined what actually happened

Is this new information that just came out?
