Auburn/Cam Newton situation (merged)

I love finding gems like this on other message boards:

This goes way beyond Cam. They say the FBI, while monitoring the Bingo mess in Montgomery and also investigating the misappropriation of TARP funds by Colonial Bank, uncovered many, many things. Such things include guaranteed winning slot machines for AU players at Milt’s (Colonial Board member, AU Booster) Casino, unmarked ATM cards issued to AU players from Colonial Bank (Bobby Lowder-AU Board Member and Booster; Pat Dye-Colonial Board member, AU employee and Booster), forgiven loans to families, friends, donors, etc.

If true, big time jail time, loss of SACS accreditation which means expulsion from the SEC, huge financial implications for AU, removal of Dye’s name from the field and so on.

Also, the AU President wanted to sit Cam last Saturday, but was overridden by Lowder, Dye, Jacobs, Rane and McGregor.

That all sounds way too nuts to be true . . . although I have heard from credible sources that there were some major shenanigans going on with Lowder at Colonial Bank.

A bit of that is too much, but there isn't a thing lowder could be accused of that would shock me if true.

Let's just say the Feds did find something illegal going on and Auburn is connected. Would the NCAA get access to that information or is this something that will drag out until after all the federal charges were prosecuted?

RT@davidpollack47 Man it sure sounds like the Cam situation is about to get ugly. Auburn fans might need to brace themselves.

I believe that is a good question. Probably the answer lies in just how much of the FBIs info they actually need to act on the C Newton thing. Probably not much.

The rest will take a while to sort out but I would be surprised to see him play against Ala.

The NCAA is under pressure to do something and it would be a debacle for them to let a deserving team that did not cheat miss the BCS while Auburn goes.

I would say the FBI would'nt show the NCAA anything until their case was resolved. I would'nt think the FBI would give a shot about recruiting violations or the NCAA. Can we get a lawyer's opinion on this?

The FBI doesn't usually make information available unless it's to protect the general public from immediate harm.

Would you still like me to explain?

I obviously haven't been paying very close attention to what is happening in Alabama. I just have a healthy skepticism based on the long history of chat boards making mountains out of unsubstantiated rumors and molehills.

So I'm approaching this in a "I'll believe it when I see news outlets actually reporting stuff" mode.

Oh... please, please let them get kicked out of the SEC.

I don't care if those posts were conspiracy, conjecture or whatever... these updates give me hope.

C'mon FBI, dig deep.

No Auburn getting booted from the SEC would not be good for the conference. However, if the alleged fraud, money laundering, extreme player benefits, and basic control of slush funds and athletic dept decisions being made by boosters....IF its all proven true, the university will lose accreditation and have no choice but to leave the conference. Again IF true, then they deserve everything coming to them...and it certainly seems like these issues go far beyond the Newtons getting a few $100k. It could cost the university as a whole even on an academic level if it were found that the slush fund monies were tied to donations earmarked for academic purposes or any proof of academic fraud. I honestly hope its more of, and I hate this term, but, a "death penalty" deal for football a 5-10 year penalty - but let them stay around as a punching bag and an example.

Milton MCgreggor's casino has a history of playing favorites. First I've heard of AU players though, however it wouldn't surprise me.

Plaster on 104.5 pretty much acted like it was a done deal and something would come out between now and the end of next week. It's going to be a grease fire at Auburn, they're done.
