Australian Open

Miss Ivanovic is disappointing me pretty freaking badly here.

Edit: as we go to the third set, she's disappointing me a lot less. Nice to see her rally valiantly, even if she drops the third.

what a comeback, what a match. Great comeback by Ana, great finish. Too bad there's no way i can stay awake for the Nadal match. I'll have to figure out a way to watch the encore.

Ana's forehand is amazing. I know it's what gets her the publicity (not counting her looks), but it's deserving.

I wanted Ana to win, but man, it almost got to the point where I felt bad for Hantuchova. I think this word is stupidly used 95 percent of the time by sports fans, but she flat-out choked. She was up big, a couple of points didn't go her way, and then all of a sudden she couldn't hit a forehand. She recovered pretty well to open the third set, but once Ivanovic got a break, Hantuchova just collapsed. That was ugly.

Courageous match by Ivanovic, though. She didn't lose her composure, waited for things to stabilize, and then once Hantuchova flinched the slightest bit, she jumped on her throat and didn't let up. Great match.

Good to hear about Ana. I believe this will be her first slam final. I hope she puts on a good showing against Sharapova.

This will be Ana's second grand slam final. She reached the final at Roland-Garros last year.

Verc, as usual, you're spot on. Once Ivanovic got on the board with a win in the ninth game, she made the game competitive. In doing so Hantuchova completely tightened up. Mphs, you mentioned Jankovic crying wolf with her injury (only to possibly change your mind), well there's no doubt in my mind that Hantuchova cried wolf when she went to the locker room. She just used it as an attempt to regain composure. However that failed her after an amazing forehand winner from Ana on Hantuchova's next serve.

Ana knew that she had cracked Hantuchova and just fought her tough enough to let her make stupid mistakes. Easy returns and second serves from Hantuchova continually set up those monstrous forehands from Ana and Hantuchova dropped so many points into the net. It was incredible and heartbreaking to watch all at once.

and volsgal, evidently I need to rethink my theory on Tsonga. Can't wait to see that replay.

Is it just me or does Tsonga look like a video game character when he is out on the court? That dude is quick.

with Hantuchova's history of choking, I'm sure it's pretty widely known that decent players just need to hold on until the possibility of winning hits her, then she'll fold up like a lawn chair.

Honestly, that first set from Hantuchova was unbelievable. She was hitting rockets from both sides and gave Ivanovic absolutely no shot. It was as impressive of a set as I've seen.

I hadn't seen a women put on such a display of power as Hantuchova did in the first set in a long long time, if ever. Her shots were low, flat and blazing. It was all Ivanovic could do to get it across the net and hope somehow Hantuchova whiffed at the ball. Then things turned dramatically.

I don't think there's very much debate about the fact that Hantuchova is a complete mental midget.

As an aside, did you hear Carillo talking about how Hantuchova was the next Kournikova and just wouldn't stop.

i missed that. I'm pulling for Hantuchova to have a good showing this year after last night. I'm hoping she can finally rebound from that weird divorce from parents thing and just focus on tennis. I didn't know until last night that Angel Jimenez was working as her coach. She's a very gifted woman, I think she speaks six languages and she's a classical pianist.

However, she'll quickly lose my interest if she keeps up this idea of accusing Ivanovic for bad gamesmanship over the whole squeaky shoe thing.

The squeaky shoes didn't seem to bother her in the first set too much. And I fail to see how Ivanovic's squeaky shoes during a serve can cause her opponent to start badly missing forehands twenty seconds later, in the middle of a point.

Bah. I take back feeling sorry for her last night.

she's loaded with talent, but her head's never going to let her win in a big way. she has game very similar to Sharapova, but about 1/1,000,000 of the mental game.

Last night might very well have finished her.

after watching most of the encore presentation, Tsonga is huge and uber quick. He had Nadal baffled all night.

It was actually her dad, Yuri. He made the throat-slitting gesture. He's a classy guy.

i thought all he did was pull the strings of his hoodie really tight indicating choke.... not the actual throat slitting gesture?
