Baby Boomers U.S. Worst Generation?

I was honestly thinking about this yesterday reading posts on here .. I don’t have an answer .

I had those "discussions" with my wife when the kids were young. I'd let our son run wild like I did and she would "WTF are you doing" me for it and I'd bring it up that I'm letting him do the stuff we did.

You are brainwashed.

A lot of the rust belt voted for Trump because it is a coal, gas, and steel area and the Democrats are trying their damndest to kill that industry.

And yes, I was born in the rust belt and still live in the rust belt. They voted for Trump because of their jobs.

well then no wonder they voted against Trump in 2020 cause he didn't deliver

How many Gen-Xers feel like they were raised by Bob Ross and Captain Planet more than their own parents?

Thank feminists like Gloria Steinem and inflation for that. By the time those two things fully impacted the economy they pretty much ended the single family income for a lot of families. The influx of women into the job force didn't allow wages to follow the cost of living which was being impacted by things like mortgage rates in excess of 10%.

What's always puzzled me is how our generation started the helicopter parent phenomena. I was raised similar to you, on a farm and if I wasn't working, at school or playing ball I was gone on my dirt bike only to make it home for dinner. No helmets, no way to contact anyone and the parents had no clue where I was. How did people raised like that raise the bicycle helmet generation?

Absolute pendulum swing against how they were raised. Wanted to make sure their kids had a better life where mom and dad were involved and went way over board.

Wanted to have memories instead of mcmansions. Also a product of God being taken out of school too in my opinion.

God and the materialism of our (I'm assuming you're GenX also) generation doesn't explain how many of our generation turned into helicopter/bicycle helmet parents.

I am gen x.

I know many boomers won't like to hear this, and yes there were good boomer parents, but the majority of kids raised in the late 70s and 80s were absolutely thrown to the wolves. We are a generation that raised ourselves.

The first revolt against the boomers probably happened with the grunge movement. In many ways, all of this is an offshoot of that grunge movement where feelings took precedence over substance.

I think the pendulum swings back or atleast I hope but I am not sure if the 24 hour media outlet will allow it.

Think it will be hard to tell until gen z has kids. Gen Z is a really messed up generation as you probably know so I personally believe we are just doomed.

I have to agree with the bold, it wasn't the case with me but it was with several of my friends. My best friend in HS parents were teachers, in the summer it was common for him to wake up and find a note from them saying they would be gone for the next week or two. And of course that translated into party time for us....

But you are involved. There is giving your kids freedom and then giving them total freedom because you don't want to be a parent and take responsibility.

Be honest, how old were you by the time you knew your beer limit?

I was 15.

Not starting to drink at 15 but had drank so often I knew my limit.

Same here.

My parents were great and tried to be as involved as possible. But I had a ton of friends who parents were always gone where we crashed and pretty much raised ourselves.

16 or 17 I pretty much knew my limits. And I agree with much of what you are saying and that the pendulum swung way to far.

I grew up on a dairy farm so my parents and my grandparents were ALWAYS around. I think my parents went out town and left me at the alone at the house for the first time when I was 13 or so. But I had cows to milk, feed and all the other work to do so partying wasn't high on my list when they were gone.

I grew up on a farm too. I partied after the animals were fed and fields were mowed. Hell, I chugged miller high life on our john deere tractor.

By the time a lot of your generation was school age, economic pressures forced many families into reliance on two incomes. That's not to say it wasn't a choice for many boomers who simply liked what two incomes brought; but like so many bad decisions in life (political and societal), a lot of things can't be unraveled once put in place. I'm not even sure that daycare and before and after school programs were a thing when I was still in school - by the end of the 70's they were routine. I have no doubt that one generation doesn't necessarily understand pressures and decisions made by other generations; and worse, the time lag can often mean what one generation is blamed for was really the decision of a prior generation. I always told my sons that parents didn't get an instruction book; we had to learn as we went; and most of us did the best we could. Unfortunately the rules changed somewhere along the line and we couldn't do things the way our parents did.

Wow, I can't even imagine that. I don't know of anybody who did that, but I don't doubt you.

I did my fair share of partying, there were several morning milkings I had trouble remembering.

We didn't have cows. Corn, catfish, pear, pigs, horses, sheep, and chickens. I never want to clean a chicken coop ever again. My parents traveled a lot and left me alone to handle most of the duties. It was overwhelming at times, but I never got bored.

Other than his dad serving in the Marines during Vietnam his parents were the typical hippies.

Could you imagine trusting a teenager today with your entire livelihood?
