Baseball Park And Fundraising Segments On Yesterday's Sports Source Edition On You tube

And that is where conversations like this one and others all across Big Orange Country need to be directed. All of us should make our voices known to the AD that we want him to make continuation of the baseball program's momentum a top priority. AD White is the one in the best position of authority that can make it happen.

And that is my point.
The comment was made that it is CTV’s decision to make and that could not be further from the truth.
(He gets to add his input and vision.)

To a point, I agree with you. It will be CTV's decision whether he actually stays at TN or moves on to perceived greener pastures. It will have to be a decision of Danny White and the UT administration as to whether they want to commit the funds necessary to continue the momentum that CTV has started (whether under him or someone else) and make upgrades that are long overdue at LNS. I suspect these decisions will intersect after the baseball post-season and we'll have clarity at that point what everyone is thinking.

Correct, and as I have stated before, The baseball program needs to go through a full season next year of available 100% capacity and see how many sell out we have. Until we need more seats for the stadium, it makes no sense to expand. That is the point. I hope we have to build a 15,000 seat stadium one day, but we are not at that point just because we have a couple of good seasons.

I mean this would be the case if the goal of renovating LNS was solely to just give more fans a chance to attend a baseball game, but that’s not the case. It’s for committing to an elite coach like TV and showing a commitment to a program that is on the rise which sends a signal to recruits that we’re serious about baseball.

As others have stated, even the most elite programs don’t sell out 100% in conference play. I mean Vanderbilt is arguably the best program in the country and their stadium is half empty most of the time. This past weekend, USC had hundreds if not a few thousand empty seats and they have had much more success recently in CBB than we have.

You keep looking at this as one “hot shot donor” thinking about his bottom line and only caring about the dollar signs, and that’s fair. It’s your money so you care about if it’s wasted. But DW and the athletic department have to (and I am sure they are) look at this from a much broader point of view. Baseball isn’t a revenue generating program as you keep telling us so it doesn’t really matter if the ROI in the short term is big. It’s called an investment for a reason and waiting a few more seasons to invest in the program will just ensure TV leaves and we go back to the cellar.

College athletics is a business...period!

I understand your position.

As I stated, I hope the need is there to build the biggest and nicest baseball facilities in the country, currently, that is NOT the case.

Throwing up more bleachers just to tell a recruit that we seat X amount serves no purpose. The great players we have now did not care, IMO people are thinking with hearts and not heads.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree. It’s not as black and white as you keep making it. College athletics is a business….to a degree. It’s not JUST a business. I think you can make a point about football being a business, but as you are so quick to point out none of the minor sports turn a profit. It’s football and then nothing else.

If the entire point of amateur athletics is to turn a profit, then we have completely lost our way. By your logic, there has never and will never be a reason to invest in any program that isn’t football because the ROI just isn’t there. Brent Hubbs wrote a great article this week called “Pride is worth plenty.” I suggest you read it. Maybe you’ll learn a thing or two.

I love college sports. I ran track at UT. I played baseball for 10 years. I am a “minor” sport. And it’s depressing to think so many look at college sports now as an instrument for putting dollars in their pocket than for what it once was.

I played college baseball, coached and umpired at the D1 level.

You talk like the Basevols are playing at the Ag campus in a pasture.

Raises for the coaches are coming immediately. Leave the stadium decisions to DW.

LNS is easily the 13th or 14th worst stadium in the SEC. This program will not grow to what it can be if it remains that way. It’s that simple.

And when the time is right, it will happen.

Like I said, we’ll agree to disagree. You see college sports as a mechanism for generating profit and that’s fine. Everyone looks at things differently. Maybe one day you’ll enjoy sports for sports again rather than how much money it can make you.

You keep taking those little digs, that’s fine.

If I did not enjoy sports, I would not support them. But, I guess it makes you feel better to take that shot.
Have a great day and GBO!!

I’m protective of a program that I love and would like to see succeed regardless of its profit margin. So, yeah, I’ll keep taking digs because I’m honestly tired of the direction of college athletics where certain programs and certain sports are left behind due to the lack of profits they generate.

Assuming the architectural renderings that we saw for the left field line and outfield seating have not yet progressed to contract document drawings and specs, which is a rational assumption, the time for that (3 or four months) and the time for review and approval by local officials for building permits (3 to 6 months), has to happen. And then there will be a public bid and bid award period (2/3 months). Then the winning contractor will need a few months to order materials and mobilize. And in order to construct that, the contractor would have to start immediately aft the end of a baseball season in order to be finished by the first of the next season, weather permitting. So, since we are now at the end of this season, there's no way we could get that built as rendered by start of next (22) season. The earliest would be to have it ready for the start of the 23 season.

So, I'm thinking some temporary bleachers would have to be erected for next season if they want to add capacity right away.

Maybe, with Biden’s help, UTOPIA can be achieved.
Keep praying!

Yep, you have me pegged. I’m a total socialist. Free stuff for everyone.

Touchy, touchy...
Not aimed at anyone, just an observation of the current state of our country’s leadership.

We want to same things for baseball, we just disagree on the urgent nature of stadium expansion.

I would just add to the debate, if CTV leaves and word gets around that UT wouldn’t make the commitment, no one is going to enjoy the next coaching search and a lot of potential recruits are gonna start looking around.

Finally if I offended with post last evening, apologies. I missed the game but figured the celebration would continue and, well, no excuses.

This subject has been discussed as long as I have been here and probably predates that going back to Delmonico, at least.

GBO!!!

I think that’s fair. Obviously, the University needs to hold up it’s end of the bargain. It’s also going to take some donors and I believe some of them can now feel more comfortable and confident in the direction of the program than in recent past years.

I also believe Boyd is a pretty smart business guy that can look around at the college baseball landscape and television/streaming/advertising etc... and see a possible path to revenue generation that really have only existed for LSU, Arky, MSU, VU...

I have believed this for a long time, we need to invest in baseball.
With Boyd, A LOT will get done! He is very sharp!

There’s not a conflict as it relates to anything being done on campus, he’s the PRESIDENT! As for doing anything with the Smokies new park, the sports Corp and university can structure the contracts to eliminate any potential conflicts of interest with Boyd personally. Who do you think is more likely to commit conflicts of interest? Boyd’s or Haslam’s?

Hmmm.

So the President of the University owns a professional baseball team.

He’s asking city officials and tax payers to see the upside in a downtown stadium.

He has asked Vitello if he’d be into sharing, based on reports.

Soooo, yeah, when Neyland Stadium becomes Pilot Flying J Stadium? Is that what we are debating?

UF rarely sells out, UK rarely sells out, yet both took the plunge to not only expand but build infinitely better stadiums than what they had. It’s the arms race for recruiting, not the fans. 10 years ago I was in Gainesville visiting friends and we decided to go to the Friday Super Regional game against Miami about 30 min before first pitch, I walked up to the ticket booth and bought a ticket as 1st pitch is getting underway; for the #3 national seed playing their 2nd biggest rival. Chalk it up to one good year but I had people on here asking me as a season ticket holder for tickets to games weeks out and asking me to take advantage of the extra allotments season ticket holders were given. I had one guy pay me more than I was asking for tickets even when I told him there was no other buyer. If the success continues and it will, as the last 2.5 seasons have proven, there will be no issues getting 3500 people to the park to watch this kind of product.

Thanks for proving my point. If 3500 people are what you are happy with, then why expand our stadium when it seats 4200? You guys are thinking with your heart.
We have one of the best recruiting classes in the country coming in. They’re not coming in because we have the best stadium obviously. They are coming in to play for Coach and to play for the University of Tennessee. We will make the improvements that need to be made, but a new stadium immediately is not the issue. I would much rather see better indoor facilities in locker room for the players and coaches.
