The NBA is wildly obsessed with age, which often correlates to perceived potential/ceiling, rather than actual production. That doesn’t necessarily apply to Reed considering he was productive at UK, just an in general statement. Why was Reed Sheppard drafted above Dalton? He barely plays. Some of these draft picks make no sense.

NBA does seem bad at drafting. Way too much emphasis on “potential” it’s wild to me in a draft that was so weak they let Knecht, who looked like the most clear plug and play guy go to 17. I could understand if it was a stronger draft, but they let the most proven player in the draft fall out of the lottery. Makes little sense. First basketball game I ever watched though was LA with Shaq and Kobe and I was a fan ever since so I’m happy he’s in LA lol.Yep. Just look at Charles Barkley publicly calling NBA GMs stupid for letting DK reach 17 because of his age. GMs are just throwing darts at a board and hoping if they draft a guy young enough he’ll develop over time.
It’s my personal opinion but I think no set of GMs in professional sports is worse at drafting than those in the NBA.
I think people are reserved with Sheppard due to some subconscious biases. Let's face it, he doesn't look the part. He comes from London, KY, where he didn't play super-great competition in high school. But, he was super productive in college at the highest level. In a recruiting class of studs, he stood out.. He just turned 20 years old in June. He's a pretty elite shooter. And he proved he can play the PG position, which makes him increasingly more valuable. The NBA is wildly obsessed with age, which often correlates to perceived potential/ceiling, rather than actual production. At the moment he’s behind Fred VanVleet and Jalen Green, who play heavy minutes, so I don’t think they’re down on him. Like Knecht he will get more minutes as his team balances the load throughout the season.I think people are reserved with Sheppard due to some subconscious biases. Not everyone who comes into the NBA, even as a lottery pick, makes an immediate impact. Steph Curry, a similar style player, averaged 7.6 ppg across his first 8 NBA games. 11 ppg across his first 20 NBA games. But they allowed him to grow into his role and eventually finish 2nd in the ROY voting. And he was more than a year older than Sheppard as a rookie with two additional years of college.
*Disclaimer: this is no attempt to say Reed Sheppard is the next Steph Curry. The comparison is for illustration purposes only.
Right. By "people being reserved on him", I meant casual fans who are trying to reason with why he was a top-3 pick and not playing big minutes, immediately. I have no doubt the Rockets are still very high on him.At the moment he’s behind Fred VanVleet and Jalen Green, who play heavy minutes, so I don’t think they’re down on him. Other than having to route for a Kentucky player (though I already have to route for Edey ), I’d have been thrilled if my team drafted Sheppard. Feel like he had the highest floor in the draft and still had a decently high ceiling in what was a piss poor draft. Honestly depending on what my particular team needed I may have drafted him at 1. Don’t forget, Rockets are actually pretty deep now. Also, we’re like two weeks into the season
He's getting a rep. And not a good one. Just play ball, Grant. You're not Draymond. You're not Rodman. Just play ball. You don't have to have a gimmick.
It’s like when the nerd finally gets to the cool kids table, then tries to act like one of the cool kids but it doesn’t work out because he tries too hard.I tend to agree. I don’t understand him sometimes. He has this rep while at Tennessee as the goofy, Ivy League, Settlers of Catan loving leader and stand up guy. But then he went to the NBA and decided to try and be some enforcer instead of who he was here.
Makes no sense to me.
