Bearden RB Devrin Young Commits to Tennessee!

He went 7-6 in 2007 and landed the #1 class in the country.

He's an elite recruiter even when he's not winning.

Hes also at Alabama.

I consider that an Ace in anyones hand when recruiting. Its like recruiting at Texas and Florida. Its not really that hard.

All three schools are in talent rich areas and kids grow up wanting to go there. I could offer a kid a scholarship at Alabama and they would probably take it.

And I agree, Saban is a great recruiter!

I understand that this staff needs to pick it up in recruiting, but this was also a political beast. After what Randall Cobb has done at UK, if the locals watched another homegrown kid go to any D1 school and put up significant numbers it would have been a bad scene.

Agreed.

Also, KR/PR is becoming more of a specialized position. Flipping the field is huge on special teams.

Kids are being recruited to return first and hopefully grow into another position.

Maybe. But, according to the folks at Rivals, Alabama didn't sign a single top-10 class in any of the 5 years prior to Saban's arrival.

Question. If he turns out to be a Mark Jones type player, would you think he is worth a scholly? Play a little bit of everything and be able to flip the field and maybe occasionally return one for a TD. Personally I say yes he is. But I also realize that's an if. But that's who I think he can be like.

If he's on Mark Jones' level, he's a no-brainer. Jones was a much bigger deal than Young coming out of high school.

They were on probation for the first 3 or so of those years, with limited scholarships and also had a coaching change in there, I think. I would think that you'd have to agree that it would be hard to be on top with fewer signees and the stigma of sanctions, regardless of who's coaching or how easy it is to recruit there. Being on probation with sanctions could easily influence your next few classes as well, given the resulting state of your program.

I don't think that Bama not signing top classes while on probation is any kind of proof that Dooley can't recruit and that he just benefited from the magic of Saban all along. That seems to be the ultimate point you're trying to make. Time will tell, but that kind of logic will not.

I think this is a great pick-up! Whoever said his senior vid looks like someone is pushing fast forward a couple of times was spot on! It is only his first five games this year too!

This may be a 3* that actually does get bumped up in rankings after his senior year performance. Huge difference in first vid and second! Very fast and long strides, plus he is a hometown boy and grew up rooting for the VOLS!!

I was blown away by his junior film...and from what I'm reading and hearing he's taking it to another level as a senior...20 yards per touch is unreal...even against the competition he's playing...

My only question is...who is this guys coach? 52 touches in 5 games (10 per)...for clearly your best player? That doesn't make sense...oh well...

If he's recruited as an every down back then yes this is a bad pickup....but if he's recruited to be an "offensive specialist" then I think he fits that role perfectly

From what I understand, they are blowing out everyone they have played to this point. Coach is trying to keep him fresh and healthy by not playing him once the game is out of reach.

Hell yea!!! We haven't had a player like Mark Jones since, well, Mark Jones. Thought Gerald Jones would be that type of player but hasn't been so much.

Wouldn't mind if took one more multi-position super fast scat type athlete in this class.

He has a 1,000 yards rushing. That's about 200 per game, so I doubt he's been needed late in the ball game. He also returns kicks and starts on D.

Yes there seems to be much fence mending needed with programs across the state. Dooley seems the type of personality to help that process and his focus on Tennessee and border states is a good strategy on paper...we'll see how it works out.

Anybody have a 40 time on this kid?

You aren't going to get much use out of HS 40 times since there's precious little uniformity. OTOH real track times at sanctioned meets are a matter of record. Here's a couple 100m times that might at least give you something to compare.

Brandon James best 100m while at FL was a 10.87. Earlier this year at the TSSAA prelims Young ran a 10.70 and in the finals finished 2nd with a 10.76.

Young is plenty fast. He's also quick though, which is at least as important. Dexter McCluster sure "looked" faster than a 4.58 40 guy, didn't he? Yet that's what he ran at the NFL combine.

It appears Young can play multiple positions. That means he is a little more valuable to a team with limited numbers. If you fill a backup position at RB or CB and a return/special teams spot, that's pretty good value out of one scholarship.

I'll take the chance that a player Stanford's staff likes can at least be a serviceable backup in the SEC.

Stop it. You're freaking me out.

Did Jones ever have a return TD? I remember him being a playmaker.

4.58 laser timed is fast. And sometimes it's better to be a guy with speed that runs by you instead of around you. That was what made McCluster good, and why Nu'keese didn't have more TD's last year.

Let me explain how this works. A marginal player needs an offer or no one will be the first. That is the way coaches are. They are not putting their neck out for a kid when no one else wants him. Jack Harbaugh, Jim Harbaugh's dad, was the Western Kentucky coach from 1989-2002. D. Young's Grandfather played with Jack in college. Jack had his son get Young an offer to attract others. Little Young made a 17 on the ACT so everyone involved knew that he would not be going to Stanford. But it worked to make others take notice. Good for Young as he worked the system. You know if he had 1 D1 offer and it was Stanford and no one else is offering and you are that small he would have committed on site. He could have always de-committed if he got an SEC offer.

Please do not put him in the same league with all of the small backs from Florida, Ole Miss etc. They had offers from everyone. Maybe he turns out who knows. But that is the story.

No "fans" ever ask why every recruit is some 4.4 kid yet each year at the combine you can count the 4.4 guys on one hand. I guess they all slowed down.
