Bearden RB Devrin Young Commits to Tennessee!

You aren't going to get much use out of HS 40 times since there's precious little uniformity. OTOH real track times at sanctioned meets are a matter of record. Here's a couple 100m times that might at least give you something to compare.

Brandon James best 100m while at FL was a 10.87. Earlier this year at the TSSAA prelims Young ran a 10.70 and in the finals finished 2nd with a 10.76.

Young is plenty fast. He's also quick though, which is at least as important. Dexter McCluster sure "looked" faster than a 4.58 40 guy, didn't he? Yet that's what he ran at the NFL combine.

Yeah, I'd say that makes it clear that he's fast enough. Good info -

And just think, Evander Wells ran a 10.01 100M. That is flat out smoking! It's a shame he tore his ACL. We could have used his speed.

4.58 laser timed is fast. And sometimes it's better to be a guy with speed that runs by you instead of around you. That was what made McCluster good, and why Nu'keese didn't have more TD's last year.

You've lost me, compared to the other noteworthy RB's at the combine that 4.58 was quite pedestrian. Hardesty, who was never labeled as a "speed" back, ran a 4.49. What made McCluster appear so "fast" was his ability to make cuts quickly and maintain his speed while doing it. That's what I was referring to as being "quick" as opposed to being "fast". Young would seem to have a good combination of both.

It's a bit early to be making that into a prediction of how good a player he'll actually be in college but Young's speed and quickness assets would seem to be pretty well vetted.

I for one and happy with this pick up. And I was trying to remember who it reminded me of and then bam... just like that it came to me.

Javier Arenas - you have probably heard of him.

Tampa Robinson defensive back Javier Arenas wasn't a heavily recruited prospect. In 2006, he was rated as a three-star player and had just one offer - Florida International. But the Alabama Crimson Tide came in late in the process, and the rest is history.

Out of high school he was listed a generous 5-9 and 180 lbs. And he clocked a 4.45 40.

I don't think you can really compare apples to apples here as circumstances are different, but this is who Young reminds me of. IMO.

I bet this thread blows up if he has an off night tonight

If Maryville's D is good enough Young won't get the chance to make many yards. I'd be astonished if Maryville kicked to him either.

The Steelers held Chris Johnson to 34yds rushing. Does this mean Johnson is a lousy RB? There's more to it than just success regardless of competition...and it's still a team sport.

football fast isn't something that appears to be understood very well around here. It's all about electronic timing is straight line bursts that makes a football player.

I'm no football genius, but the kid is football fast and has instincts that appear solid. His size is an issue, but can be overcome, as many NFLers will attest.

Precisely. If Jerry Rice ever ran under a 4.5 then I can run a 3.7. Perhaps even funnier is a guy that had his fleetness constantly berated here is the current NFL rushing leader.

I don't want anybody thinking I'm making those comparisons as to how good Young might be at the college, nevermind pro, level. I'm just saying if people want to worry about Young's playing ability it's time to move past questions about him being fast enough.

If i was the kid and read half these posts I would say F$$$ you all im going somewhere else. Cant believe this kid has generated this much discontent.
Arian Foster and kelly washington are mad as hell that this kid has taken the most controversial vol award.

I dont know squat about the kid he seems small and plays in a not so tough HS system. But I am willing to wait and see. He seems to be about the same size and speed as brandon james (maybe a bit slower) if he is anywhere close to him on ST then we are lucky to have him.

Reasonable posts like this have no place in this forum.

lol, if my kids are ever talented enough to play D1 ball I will disconnect the internet from my house I would be like Cromptons dad in the Auburn game. I dont have thick enough skin for grown me to say my kid sucks.

He only has 57 carries because Bearden has killed everybody they've played so far. I don't care about his 40 time. He looks like he has football speed in the video from this season. 40 times don't always equal football speed. Example: Wes Welker is 5'9" and ran a 4.6 40 in high school.

2010 Stats:

Rushing: 57 carries, 1006 yards, 15 TDs, 17.65 YPC

Recieving: 3 catches, 69 yards, 2 TDs, 23.00 YPC

Special Teams: 1 blocked punt, 1 punt return fro 25 yards. 6 kickoff returns for 312 yards, 52 yd avg.

Scoring: 20 total TDs, 120 pts.

To borrow a line from Barry Sanders, "If you're good enough, you're big enough".

Awesome pick up....I don't care who you are putting those types of stats on, it is impressive. And he is exactly the type of player that UT never goes after, yet always watches from behind as he passes our defenses players. GBO!

this is exactly what we needed. a guy who desperately wanted to play for tennessee. no doubt in my mind he'll give it all for the orange

Ok,, some decent points to both sides here,, but if you do not think D.Young can make some contribution to this team I need some of what your smokin'.

I guess nobody doubting this kid on this Forum was watching the 5ft 8inch RB that they have listed at 170lb but probably is closer to 160lb NAMED DEXTER MCCLUSTER run all over our defense and other SEC defenses last year!!!!

Not to mention in his 1st NFL game he set the Chiefs record for the longest Punt Return in their history.

By the way his 40 time at the combine- 4.58 But I'm sure all you Fooball experts on the nation are right. Lets just recruit kids based on measurables and not performance.

:crazy::crazy::crazy:

Alright, well you sold me VOLS INC. Since he is near the same height and weight as McCluster then he will be just as good.

No, you don't get that gurantee with any player we recruit because you don't know how they are going to adapt to college, speed of the game, a more complex offense, maturity issues, etc... But I would think that after seeing players like Mccluster, MJD, Sproles, Parrish, etc... that the SIZE argument has proven to be BS.

He might suck in college but him being small and not a 4.4 guy won't be the reasons why he sucks.
