Bearden RB Devrin Young Commits to Tennessee!

If the staff believes he can help out at a position (CB, WR, RB, etc.) then I'm all for it. But we can't afford just to take a "returner" as some are suggesting. We need more depth in other places.

I definitely think taking a kid who COULD make an impact as a freshman is more important than taking a lesser OL who, in all likelihood, wouldn't see the field until he was a RS junior or senior.

We need more depth everywhere. I think were even short on waterboys right now

Depends on how many he takes to the house. Since it hasn't happened in recent memory, if this kid can return 2 or 3 a season for TD's and continously give our O good field position, I would say it's totally worth a scholly, even if he does nothing else.

I'm not saying you do specifically, but people don't understand the return game in terms of kickoffs. On punt returners, it usually is about the player. But on KO's, it's more about positioning, blocking down the field, creating an initial hole. I haven't complained about our returners because they haven't had much room to work. I think Oku's has two good blocking returns this year, and he's done well both times (think it was the 40 & 36).

Oku still has a ways to go to be a good punt returner. Dooley said so himself.

Question: what year does Devrin win the Heisman?

Question: How much Hater-aid did you drink this morning??

The Kid looks good, plays hard, and notice how after every touchdown he kneels and points to god, instead of doin the soulja boy or some other BS dance in the endzone? Men of God usually have good character.

So lets see- Plays hard,Humble, explosive, wants to play here and we need as many good players as we can get as we are not short on Scholly's... SO WHATS YOUR PROBLEM WITH THIS EXACTLY?

Why would any of you not be pleased that we offered this kid? Local, talent, and a Vol. WTF? Anyone against this offer is full retard.

I have no problem with it. He fills a position of need and since he is a Tennessee boy he obviously deserved an offer over anyone from out of state.

man that guys pretty fast/elesuive. i know it may be a bad comparison but he kinda reminds me of chris johnson, he's probably not gonna break many tackles at the line, but if he gets past the 1st level hes gonna make some moves and keep fighting.

i will say he cuts back a lot crossfield, and realistically that isn't going to happen in the SEC

You've lost me, compared to the other noteworthy RB's at the combine that 4.58 was quite pedestrian. Hardesty, who was never labeled as a "speed" back, ran a 4.49. What made McCluster appear so "fast" was his ability to make cuts quickly and maintain his speed while doing it. That's what I was referring to as being "quick" as opposed to being "fast". Young would seem to have a good combination of both.

It's a bit early to be making that into a prediction of how good a player he'll actually be in college but Young's speed and quickness assets would seem to be pretty well vetted.
You just completely missed the major point of my post. Congrats.

Let me explain how this works.
...
Please do not put him in the same league with all of the small backs from Florida, Ole Miss etc. They had offers from everyone. Maybe he turns out who knows. But that is the story.

Thanks for that brilliant insight. I had forgotten Idaho, Western Kentucky, Akron and South Florida were all over McCluster. You nailed it.

You guys supporting this lighting-fast change-of-tempo back are crazy. We need a 5'10 guy for solid production. Someone more like David Oku.

Wait...nevermind.

If he turns out to be a Darren Sproles clone he could be very useful.
Sproles broke school records at Kansas Sate as a running back and was only 5-6.
Now plays for SanDiego.
Who knows.

Personally, I'd much rather give an offer to a scatback who may be "too small", but who already has 1,000 yards (not including his receiving), averages 17.6 a carry and has returned 3 of 6 kickoffs for TDs, than a guy who is built "right" and averages 4.2 but shows "great potential".
(I understand the competition may be weak, but those are great numbers at any level.)

Dooley has already said that they watch the guys instead of going with how many stars they have or who else wants them. (Still, you'll notice that UT is listed as recruiting nearly all the top rated guys, too.)

5' 7", 160 lbs... We need a dozen of these. Right, Brent Hubbs? Why don't we offer a scholarship to Joe Sloe from Paint Rock?

I'll take him if he turns out like this guy:

Darren Sproles Grade: 3.44
Position: HB
Class: Sr
School: Kansas St.
Conference: Big 12
Ht., Wt.: 5-6, 187
40 Time: 4.5
Selected by: San Diego Chargers
Round 4, pick 29 (130 overall)

Devrin's performance on offense tonight comes down to what Riemer can do. Maryville will have the box loaded all night if Bearden can't scare them early with Williamson and Pollack.

I'm with you on that, but just how many of these "under the radar," development project recruits will pan out. Dooley simply must land the lion's share of the top recruits left on UT's recruiting board, or his tenure here will be very short.
