Beer (and beer pics!)

as someone who isn't a beer drinker, every time I taste beer I think, "wow, that tastes like ass".

quality of the beer doesn't matter either. To me, Black Label tastes just like Guinness.

Curious as to your age. I used to be just like you when I was young. It is interesting how your taste buds can change. I drank only liquor as a young man and then would occasionally drink light beer late in college. But for a long time, it had to be light beers. Now, I try all kinds and have a hard time drinking a light beer. I am still not a dark beer fan, but I cannot believe what I am drinking now than what I did back in college.

I'll be 45 in just over a month. The first time I ever got drunk, it was on beer. I also got wretchedly sick. I was about 16. Haven't liked the taste of beer since.

Oddly enough, I can drink the flavored malt beverages like Mike's Hard Lemonade or the various "wine cooler" variants.

Wow....if you can taste the difference btwn 2 beers like that, you have a really, really bad palette

Guinness is a dry stout. It is OK, but I'm not the biggest dry stout fan. I personally like their Extra Foreign stout much, much better.

It's taste, so it is subjective. However, I would take a Boddington's or a Beamish over a Guinness, were I to reach for a stout. I'm not too concerned with calories or ABV, so the fact that Guinness is low in both is of no consequence to me.
I know it was already covered, but Boddington's isn't a stout. Not even that close. Sure it's got a widget in the can that makes it pour all pretty, but c'mon. You aren't the only one though, on another site we had fun with this so-called bartender telling us how she served Boddington Stout at her pub and it was her favorite. The best part was the pub was in Tuscaloosa which furthered our opinion that just living there kills brain cells.

the first seven words in the post you quoted should have given you a clue as to why I don't discern a difference

I read the first 7 and doesn't matter. You don't have to drink beer to be able to tell you are drinking 2 completely different tasting liquids. That's like saying "I don't eat fruit, so I couldn't tell you the difference btwn an apple and a lemon."

bad comparison, but whatever helps you sleep at night

Very good comparison. The difference between a cheap american beer, like a PBR, tastes vastly different than a heavy dark beer, like Guinness. I can't imagine anyone sitting down and tasting both of those and saying "wow. They taste the same to me. I can't tell I just drank 2 different things".

Another comparison...coke and mountain dew. I assume you could sit down and tell those things tasted different. Doesn't mean you like them, just they were different tasting.

coke is a cola, a more apt comparison would be to Pepsi or RC

but keep on using silly comparisons, I know that there are differences in quality from PBR to Guinness, but I don't have a beer palette. I don't know why you've taken such offense, but really, get over it.

I'm sure a smoker could tell the difference between an unfiltered Camel and a Virginia Slim, but to a non-smoker, both smell like burning plastic and probably taste even worse

PBR is an American lager and Guinness is a dry stout. Mountain Dew and Coca Cola are both sodas much as PBR and Guinness are both beers, but vastly different kinds with markedly different tastes.

I'd understand if you couldn't tell the difference between PBR and Old Style or Belgo and Hop Wallop, but anyone with taste buds can tell you there's a difference between two beers that aren't the same exact style.

EXACTLY! You may not like what you taste, but the difference is night and day btwn pbr and a stout. You don't have to have a "beer palette" to taste the difference. I understand not drinking beer...I don't really drink liquor. But if you gave me a blind taste test of a gin and a scotch, I might not be able to identify each, but certainly would know they taste entirely different.

Although he didn'y say it, I think MG was probably being a bit dramatic with his comparison of PBR and Guiness, but the fact is he doesn't like beer.

I used to be the same way- taste and smell. My taste buds have changed, but I can relate. I used to not have a clue about the difference in beers- just that one may be different in color than the other.

I still don't care for dark beers.

Yeti - Imperial Stout from Great Divide Brewing - like this one. Still in my infancy on Stouts. Milo - will try your advise on Russian Imperial Stouts.

Pattern seems to be start with 1-2 lighter beers but end the night on a Stout, makes the Stouts taste better.

Refreshments after yard work - can't seem to get enough of the Twisted Kilt Scottish Ale.

Not a fan of any imperial stouts. Too heavy for me and I love dark beers.

Wrong thread but brewing an oatmeal stout this afternoon after all my honey do stuff.
