I've only been drinking whiskey for about 6-7 months now, but really like it a lot and have enjoyed trying new and different ones. So far my favorites are;
1. Evan William Black Label - mainly because it takes good for the price ($14/750ml here in Portland). This has become of main go to Bourbon for the cost and flavor. Not overly complex but lots of sweet corn and caramel, just a bit of burn and a pretty smooth finish.
2. Very Old Barton 90 - Just got a bottle the other night ($15/750ml) and it might just replace Evan Williams as my inexpensive go to. Very smooth with corn, rye, vanilla, caramel. Slight burn and smooth finish. This is very tasty for the price.
3. Bulleit Frontier - Personally this is my favorite but it's a bit pricey ($31/750ml). Very complex and spicy with vanilla and cinnamon. Overall a great bourbon. Can't wait to taste the 10 year ($40/750ml).
Others I have tried with were OK but I didn't feel were worth the price. Makers Mark ($27/750ml), Jim Beam ($20-4yr and $24-8yr/750ml), Knob Creek (tastes great but expensive $40/750ml). While all of these are very good I just don't think they are worth the cost compared to the others. A couple of others I have tried Dickel #12 (gave me headaches), Buffalo Trace (good but not great), and Elijah Craig (pretty good inexpensive 12 year).
I've also tried a couple of Scotches (Johnnie Walker Red, Dewers White) which I didn't really care for that much. Tasted like I was drinking burnt dirt, but it might end up being an acquired taste so I might try some others in the future.. I haven't branched out into Rye or Canadian whiskey's yet but look forward to giving some of them a try.
