Best Whiskey

Nice. I typically keep a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail and a Glenmorangie (Nectar D'Or, Quinta Ruban or Lasanta). I enjoy them all.

Quinta Ruban is incredible. I've become fond of the peaty tastes...Laphroaig is good, Lagavulin is the nuts.

The 17 year old is very good. But I wouldn't say it's an excellent value. Used to be, but they've been raising the price.

The 10 year old is ok. I like others for the price.

I've had this a few times recently and really like it. Has anyone tried Jefferson's Ocean?

I would like to try a decent whiskey or scotch but am clueless about the stuff. Seems a bit expensive to experiment with and not enjoy it.

I have a feeling I am not refined enough to really enjoy it. I hate stuff like JD, too sweet for me, but I like crap like Sugarlands Shine unaged rye. I fear the actual good stuff would be lost on me.

Maybe there is a local (Knox) bar that provides a few clues and some samples? Just the difference between scotch, whiskey, bourbon, and so forth would be a start.

If you're a novice and just want to do some sampling, go buy some airplane bottles. There's enough variety to get a sense... bourbon: woodford, buffalo trace, makers, knob creek. tennessee whiskey - Gentleman Jack, Single Barrel. Scotch - there's a lot that are available, but pick one out from each of the regions - lowland, highland, island, speyside, Islay

Of course you could go to a bar, but they'll upcharge you and then it really will get expensive to try a lot of different whiskeys.

I haven't been to McScrooges in forever but they have a good selection. They might even do tastings?

Whiskey and bourbon are something that you will probably have to acquire a taste for. Straight on ice isn't for everyone. I can tell you there are some stronger flavored ones that I don't like to drink straight. It may take you a few different kinds before you find one you like.

I would start out with Buffalo Trace or Gentleman Jack. Both are good and not super bold in flavor.

I can't help you with scotch as I haven't tried too many of them.

Thanks golfballs and OrangeSmokey for the tips. I do not drink often, but when I do I like to taste it so it would be something nice and straight.

I'd recommend going to a place like Stock & Barrel. There you'll have employees that can tell you things that will stand out in the whiskeys and you can do flights
