Bible Topic Thread (merged)

I believe that the person that spoke in the tounge must also interpret so as to be held accountable for his speach. I truely believe that it is done in todays Church as tradition and not truely speaking from God.

There were only a few people that did the interpreting. Usually the pastor or his wife, or an elder. I always wondered if it was their agenda they were trying to get across, or if the Lord really gave them the gift of interpreting. Who could ever know?

The definition, that I take from the Bible, of speaking in tongues is that no man, except the one speaking in the tongue and God, knows what is being said.

1 Corinthians 14:27

If anyone speaks in a tongue, two- or at the most three - should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

Take it how you will. I take it to mean anyone can interpret.

(note, if i'm not supposed to make biblical scriptures, I apologize)

I stand corrected and I thank you. I guess that the between God and himself stuck in the wrong context. It has been a while since I have read I Corinthians

baptism is just another step, a public display cleansing yourself. Once you accept Jesus as your savior by Christian doctrine you will go to Heaven. Even if you're not baptized.

I didn't read the whole thread, but I'll say this in response to one of OE's earlier questions.

I've been in and around the church my whole life, went to a private Christian school and minored in Bible. Even flirted with the idea of going to a seminary. I fully believe the Bible is fallible. Not on the major points, but in small key areas that don't have much if any difference in the overall theme of the Bible. Humans are not perfect and I don't believe they could write anything, even the Bible without mistake. I know the Bible translations we read today in English are marked with errors. The languages just doesn't allow for a perfect translation.

Good post!

the Bible was pretty clear on creation. the Bible talks about people who lived before the flood and described them as giants. i know that ax heads have been found that weighed 30-40 lbs this would give creed that there were men that could be considered as giants. i don't know if dinasaurs existed, if they did, they weren't spared before the flood.

Do you believe the angels mixed with humans to make those giants?

I don't believe that God inspired the writers to make mistakes, but due to the fact that humans are not perfect I don't think we would have been capable of writing a perfect book. There are several incidents of contradiction in the Tanakh and NT that give me my belief. Again though, I don't think any of the mistakes made in the Bible have any effect on the spiritual meaning of the Bible. Also, if you look at books that did not make the Tanakh or the NT, how is man perfect enough to know which books were truly God inspired and which books weren't? The books of the Old Testament Apocrypha provide some very interesting reading to put it lightly. If these books were truly inspired by God, wouldn't we know which books make up the Biblical canon immediately and not have to hold the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD?

wasn't necessarily trying to change your mind. I had forgotten where it was until Kev gave the earlier Corinthians reference, that I recalled and looked it up again.

You did not change my mind, the scripture did, thanks for posting it.

There used to be a couple guys that would just laugh, and laugh, and laugh forever when the Spirit moved them. It was funny as...nevermind. No one ever interpretted that.

You have obviously never heard someone speak in tongues. It can be startling. As far as I know, it is just the Spirit of the Lord speaking through you. It's not something you can just do.

The Bible is very specific on the test for speaking in tongues.

I have witnessed it and I will honestly say I thought it was a little odd.

I do think that the speaker should know what he has said, or it is not from God.

I really don't know enough about it. I sort of think it could be such an out of body experience if you will that the speaker might not fully be in control and thus not know what he/she is saying. But part of me thinks that whole theory is nonsense, that the speaker should have much more control. Again, it is definitely one of my weaker points in knowing the Bible and spreading the word.

that makes me laugh.

I brought this up in another thread but I have attended a church deep in the bowels of Pike County Kentucky that used to have an elderly man who would come in with the help of a walker.

During the song service he would start screaming and literally start running around the church. The first time I thought the world was ending but every one else around me didn't flince.

Did a snake bite him?

I always miss too many posts, but how much of arole should church (Not just God) play in your life? The reason I ask is because I clearly remember when my parents were getting divorced the preacher coming and basically making my mother feel 2 inches tall for doing it. I'm not going to get personal on here, but let's just say I firmly believe while God doesn't want people to get a divorce, in this instance it was the best thing. I think some people listen to what the "church" than to God. I defend Christinaity so much on here that I've never really gotten a chance to say that on here. Don't get me wrong, church is very important and it's where you worship, etc. but I think some people get "power" and lose sight of what it's really about.

Exactly...........

A lot of times a church is a mere social club for people to meet and great every week.

My sister got a divorce and it was the best thing that ever happened to her!
