BIG 10 invites are out

There's not going to be any official word on any of this until an agreement is reached and a contract is signed.

I'm not investing anything in this until I hear from a credible source, BUT if I had to put money on it, I'd say that Pitt and Missouri will be making the move.

I haven't heard anything saying Pitt has been invited. I think they would be a good match for the Big 10, but the only full-time Big East school I've heard mentioned is Rutgers. I think Rutgers is a bad choice. Memphis would be the 1st school the Big East targets as a replacement.

No, because it gets them further into the New York City market in college football, and that's what they really want; much more than "what power team can I get"

(yes i'm aware it's in jersey but it has a very big market pull there)

my money's on Rutgers and Mizzou, with an expected no from Notre Dame.

Haven't heard anything about pitt other than (slightly) weaker rumors

I just can't see the Big Ten just letting Kansas twist in the wind, also. If they really made a run at Nebraska and Missouri, they have to be considering Kansas.

The vast majority of New York City couldn't give less of a damn about college football. If they think adding Rutgers to the Big Ten will change that, they're living in a fanatsy world.

Rutgers football is slightly more relevant to the New York sports fan than cricket.

I realize that too when I read all this on expansion talk and such, but a league picking up a team for at least trying to get at least a door open into the NYC market...that really does make alot more sense from the monetary standpoint.

which is perhaps the one aspect the Big 10 is already really strong in to begin with

again, big 10 just wants to kick a door open into that market. If it doesn't work, they still have a whole bunch more big markets to fall back on. (I realize north = pros, south = college)

if it does work...and somehow starts getting big 10 games played as the regional coverages in the NY area, then they're rolling in even more money than they had to begin with, and they look smart afterwards

I mean it can go either way

How long has Rutgers been playing football? If people in the City don't care by now, I seriously doubt they'll be waiting breathlessly for Rutgers-Iowa and Rutgers-Northwestern.

I think it'd be a smart move for Missou football wise, Rutgers too. The Big East is a joke in football.
I don't think Nebraska should leave the Big 12. Nor do I believe that Notre Dame will join. They would be giving up too much.

What would Notre Dame be giving up, other than an easy schedule?

look, I'm not saying at all it's going to work, nor am I arguing that it's going to go through this way; I'm saying that's their rationale behind this move

more likely than not, nothing will change. and the Big 10 will fall back on their Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Minneapolis, Cleveland, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis markets and be fine

they're just risking it b/c there is some chance that it could work, and if either Rutgers maintains a very good level or the Big 10 games gain regionality there like the SEC game of the week on CBS does here, they can expand into a really big market (either through Rutgers or through fan base expansions of OSU, Michigan, or Penn St.).

Pretty much it's just that conference has that really strong market where they can take that risk here and if it doesn't do anything, they're not hurt really that much at all by taking said risk

their own television network deal, a 10-2 or 9-3 record getting them into a BCS game....also ND really just doesnt need the money, plus the deal to make up for it would give ND a ridiculously larger slice of the pie than the other conference teams

I agree with the market, but who really cares about Rutgers football, or basketball for that matter? Camden is a suburb of Philly. I don't think anyone there really cares. I think Pitt would be a better choice.

The conference already considers Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Minneapolis, Cleveland, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis as Big 10 markets. I mean they already have Pittsburgh as an area that gets Big 10 network (for one thing) with or without Pitt.

Pitt's a better team than Rutgers yeah, but the Big 10 is almost trying to expand their already rich market with this move perhaps more than they are trying to bring up the quality of their competition. College football's oh so much about the money

IF all of this is true, it will be interesting to see how the dominoes fall... Who does the Big 12 go after if Nebraska and Mizzou leave? Do they put one of the original SWC teams back in the Big 12 and reorganize the north/south division? TCU, SMU, and Rice were not to happy about being left out because of politics when the Big 12 formed.

I feel the Mountain West is so close to getting AQ status but losing TCU or Utah would be devastating.

I do think they could snatch TCU up pretty easy (and if Nebraska stayed, then they would just need to move someone like Ok. St. to the North half).

Assuming Nebraska jumps ship too, that 12th team might be a bit interesting to see where they go...some guesses include a Utah or a BYU grab

Rice has the same chances of being invited to join the Big 12 that Tulsa or UTEP does. None.
