huh, apparently the Big East hired Paul Tagliabue as an unpaid consultant, presumably to help them during this Big 10 expansion debacle that's going to hit them

Agreed. The Big Ten and SEC make significantly more than the Big 12 and other conferences. Don't know why Arkansas would leave for less, or even comparable, money.

outside of a year or so in basketball and football they have not been the juggenaut they were while playing out west with oklahoma and texas they used to play in big bowls every year now they set home alot ,it would help them i think but i say they stay in sec.unless we can get texas oklahoma ,miami fla, north carolina and duke

financially though, it really wouldn't help arky....and that's perhaps more than anything what alot of these schools are looking at with expansions, not how well they'd do in a conference

I get the Big 10 going after Rutgers, at least in theory. Same for Missouri. Notre Dame is a no-brainer. Nebraska even makes sense.

I don't get Pitt. You already have a team in that market. Makes no sense to me.

I realize football is driving this, but if they are going to do it, Kansas makes more sense to me for basketball purposes alone.

I just can't see Nebraska leaving. I would think their alumni and fans would react the same way UT or Bama would if they decided to leave the SEC.

Andy Katz says no formal invitations have been extended, and they won't before the Big 10+1 meetings in June. If they are, Missouri, Nebraska, and Rutgers would be interested.

Curiously, he says other schools the Big 10+1 is considering include Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Vanderbilt.

I'm surprised Louisville isn't in the Big 10 plans. Huge fan base with very solid basketball, football and baseball programs. New stadiums and would be instant rivals with the likes of Indiana,Purdue & Ohio State.

Louisville is a small market, which I believe already has the BigTenNetwork..... therefore, LU wouldn't make enough money to pull its own weight. In order to make it worth it for the B10, they must believe that the addition of the school will increase revenue by enough to go around the conference. Schools make $20M in tv revenue, therefore in order to be worth it, the added school must bring in more than $20M/year in tv revenue. If the BTN is already in Louisville, then they won't be adding a market (no revenue) and LU's brand isn't national enough (like NEB or ND) for them to make it up in network contracts and add revenue.

If they take Pitt you'll get the whole state of Pennsylvania as your market. Much like the thought of if the SEC picked up Ga Tech, the whole state of georgia would be an SEC market even though GT is a small market fan base in Atlanta.

Plus Pitt is a decent team that would be more suited to compete in the Big 10 as opposed to Rutgers.

could be further down their list possibly, but expanding their market into KY isn't really a goal of theirs at this pt

problem is though they already have the Pittsburgh market, as they do the philadelphia market. So pretty much they already have the whole state of PA. I think the whole merit/argument of adding Pitt goes more towards the "big 10 needs to add some decent/good teams" that people/fans keep making

I would expect NEB, Mizzou, ND, Rutgers and Pitt to accept.

Then the SEC will nab Tex, A&M, then 2 of VT, FSU, Miami, Clemson, GT or USF.

Exactly the same deal as UGA and the Atlanta market. But, bringing in GT would hem up the whole state. Same with Pitt. While they only bring in a small market, they will completely own Pa. Probably just as much of a status thing as it is for revenue, etc.

ND isn't going to accept the offer; people need to get that 1) nd is in too good of a place right now and 2) the deal to compensate for what ND would lose would give them such a bigger slice of profit then everyone else that it would piss off the schools like OSU that have been carrying the conference (playing well) the last few years

ND has too much to lose in this case....I'm not even sure the threat of the big east falling (where the rest of its sports are) is even enough to balance out their own bcs scenarios and such

As for the sec, I haven't heard expansion talk on our end at all....other then teams fans want to see added. I'm not sure we are in a position where we would "have to" yet...but if we did, I would expect a southern big east team like usf before an acc team (save maybe ga tech, but I can still see them going either way)

But they already have Pittsburgh and Philadelphia as big 10 network major markets (the ones where the network makes 70 cents per household rather than just 10) if that's the case, then it sounds very much like they already have Pittsburgh and the whole state of Penn wrapped up.

It just sounds more like the "level of play argument" so I don't think Pitt is major priority to them, and they don't seem to be in the list of 4 teams said to be offered. Now perhaps though they could be the 16th team if all 4 accept, but it just isn't looking right now like the big 10 is super gung ho for them.

I do understand what you are trying to say though

There was an article in the other expansion thread that quoted Slive saying that the SEC won't expand unless the Big 10 expands to more than 12.

Pitt and Penn State had a big rivalry up until they went to the Big East and Big 10. I think the Big 10 would want to renew that.

This whole thing is being driven by the Big 10 network. They already have the PA market. There is no need for Pitt.

For that matter I see no reason whatsoever for the SEC to go after GA Tech if (when) the SEC expands. The only markets that make sense to me are Texas, maybe Miami, or a Virginia school (Va Tech).

Right, but again the big 10 already pretty much has the whole market of the state of PA (which was part of the original discussion). They don't need Pitt for monetary and/or marketing reasons.

Again, if they need a 16th team bc ND accepts (which most say they won't) then I can totally see them going Pitt's way. but I just don't think Pitt makes their top 4 wants list, however

We honestly can't get Texas though, I'm not sure why we keep throwing their name around.
