Bill Self should...

You're telling me the expectation at KU every season is not to get to the final four?
The expectations of the following teams, were definitely not to get to the Final Four:
2004-05
Giddens
Simien
Moody
Miles
Lee

2005-06
Wright (freshman)
Kaun (sophomore)
Robinson (sophomore)
Chalmers (freshman)
Rush (freshman)

I'd say it's a goal, not an expectation. By your standards every coach in American history save Wooden have been miserable failures.

No, this was the first season in Knoxville that there was an expectation to go to the final weekend. That is the expectation every year at KU, UNC, DU, UCLA (save the Lavin years), etc....

Illinois "expects" to go to Final Fours? If so, they're really idiots. How many have they been to in their history?

You haven't really explained what Bill Self has done to deserve such high status...sure three elite eights with three different schools...but no final fours, and the number of final fours a coach gets to is the real measuring stick.

The fact of the matter is that a coach that hasn't gone to the final four in eight years at schools that expect him to cannot be held at the same standard as guys like Pitino, Roy Williams, Coach K, and Billy D. Self is a great coach, but until he proves otherwise, he's not an elite one.

Precisely.

Not to any fan with any semblance of knowledge concerning the game.

Lavin made a regional final. I can think of a few coaches that have never done that.

Not EVERY year, but the Sweet 16 should be within reach with great regularity.

This would be only UNC's 21st trip to the Elite 8

Some of these 'elite' expectations are not so easy or so common to accomplish.

The Sweet Sixteen is definitely an expectation every year for the Jayhawks. However, Roy really left the program in pretty poor shape, IMO. Self got his players into the program by his second season, but they were all incredibly young and inexperienced. Now, those same players, are all looking to bring home the Championship prior to starting their careers in the NBA (five should play in the Association next season: Rush, Arthur, Kaun, Chalmers, and Jackson; Collins will be there in a couple years.)

Carolina was more like that during the Dean Smith years, but after he retired, most fans were forced to adjust a bit before our more recent rebound, IMO. Roy is doing great at Chapel Hill!

If Ray Mears would have known how to use Ernie and Bernie, then there would be at least one National Championship banner hanging right now.
They'd have had to win it in '77, beacause there's no chance in Hades they'd have beaten IU in '76 or UCLA in '75.
