Bill Self should...

Me too on the Roy over BD. Thus the point of me not buying this whole Pearl is not in Self's league because his record "dwarfs" Pearl's.

By that measure, Steve Fisher is a better coach than Ben Howland.

Inking one of the most talented freshman classes of all time is not small feat. You can bring up a number of comparisons between two coaches to fit your opinion...but I happen to believe that coaching a team to a Championship carries a little weight.

I would definitely take this guy:

Why would anyone want a football player coaching basketball is beyond me...

You're telling me the expectation at KU every season is not to get to the final four?

As a Jayhawk fan, I can give you an easy answer to that question. No.

We wish it, hope for it, fervently pray for it, but we don't expect it. We have played basketball for 110 seasons, and this is our 13th Final Four. There has never been a time when I looked up at the banners in Allen Fieldhouse and thought, "Darn, only 13!"

Bill Self now has the monkey off his back, and every Jayhawk, man woman and child, would probably admit they cried a little when Self pounded the floor at the end of that game. We love him, and we wouldn't trade him.

But, Bruce Pearl? He is an excellent coach. He didn't step into 105 years of basketball tradition like Self did. He's done great things at Tennessee so far, and I don't believe he's even close to done.

Wish we could be playing you next weekend, but good luck next year. We're losing most of our team and do NOT expect to be back to the Final Four next year, but, maybe...

Rock Chalk and Go, Vols! :clapping:

Expect, in the literal sense, may be a bit high. But the perennial strong programs have a year in, year out expectation to at least compete and position themselves to have a chance to play on the final basketball weekend. As a UT fan, until this season we were quite content with just making the tournament, much less winning any games. That is not the case for KU, Duke, UNC, etc...

At a storied program like KU, with the rich tradition, and excellent talent being brought in, the fan base satisfaction must come from more than just getting to the tournament. If Bill Self had lost yesterday, there would have been many rumblings about his future based on his failures to get past the regionals. As you said - the monkey is off his back. You only have the monkey if an ongoing expectation is there.

Not if MH is your AD! (sorry couldn't resist) The monkies left with Delmonico!

I knew when I was typing I was setting up the perfect Fulmer bash. But to that point - I believe Fulmer has a gargantuan monkey on his back to get an SEC crown. But only because the expectation is there.

if bill self had lost yesterday there would have been grumblings because it was expected THIS year. but that is not the case literally or figuratively. I never once expected Duke to be a Final Four contender this year despite all the media love they were given for playing in the weakest ACC field in years.

So this "monkey" that Jim Nance exhaulted on TV after the game and the one that KU fans talk about only arrived this year?

And it explains a lot knowing you are a Duke fan.

no... the monkey was obviously there, but the point remains that NO school expects a final four every year.
