Bobby Petrino Lovers' Thread

I know I will be blasted for this so let me state my reasons.
1) Very sucessful in the SEC
2) Will have facilities second to none
3) Relentless worker & recruiter
4) We will be able to secure him for less then 2 million allowing us to have a say in & large payroll for the new o.c. & d.c. if we choose not to maintain Cheney.
5) Finally I believe you can do a reverse buyout here. If Petrino decides to resort to his old tricks wether bolting for a better job or be-friending a lovely co-ed from East Tennessee he has to pay us a minimum of $5 Million.

Call me loco but I believe he is the best available to bring us back to the promise land the quickest, Roast away[/QUOTE

A very tempting candidate. Petrino with a top notch DC could possibly win championships and we could get him cheap. The question is his credibility with the team, parents of recruits and Vol Nation in general. Before we get to a second tier, we should give him a look.

I am not condoning his action at all.
I just can not believe some on here would want Golden, Gundy of Fisher.
I would of course take Gruden, Strong or Peterson before Petrino like most on here.
I just am not feeling the ones that are being interviewed right now.
Keep C.J.G. & bring in C.T.M. & those former Vols will tell recruits what Tennessee football is about.

Jim Tressel is another top rung coach with some baggage. But he has won NCs, can recruit and coach. He could recruit nationally which is what UT needs and hire staff who can recruit the SE. The downside is that he will have the NCAA spotlight on UT. I believe his penalties are something like he can't coach in his first 5 games or the teams first bowl game. He can recruit and do all other coaching duties without restrictions. He has to file a report to the NCAA every 6 months.

These restrictions should be manageable to get an exceptional coach. He is another good candidate we should consider before dropping to that second tier.

Yeah: The conversation would go something like this:

Hart: "Bobby, is there any program or person you have never cheated on?"

Bobby: "No, I don't think so. As best I can remember, I cheated in Kindergarten, throughout elementary school, middle school, high school, college, on my girlfriends, my wife, and my mistress. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. Why do you ask?"

Hart: "Well, I am looking for a man of integrity to lead the impressionable young men on our football team."

Bobby: "Yes sir, I'm your man. I bought an Acura Integrity as soon as they came on the market back in the early 90's! I still got it in my garage."

Hart: "Next!"

There is a list among the MAJORITY of highly successful Men-----Those that Cheat and those that have been caught. Presidents on down. Factoid.

I wouldn't mind the new coach bringing Petrino in as QB Coach or OC - he has had great success in those areas in the past. Let's see how he behaves for a couple of years, and if our HC leaves or retires... then consider Bobby as a HC candidate. Right now, he would be a hard sell to parents as HC.

It's a mistake for us not to talk to him. He is far and away the best coach out there. I don't have any moral hangups, I would love to have Petrino, Tressell, or Davis. In the business of football Petrino makes the most sense. The only arguments against him is that he hasn't beat Alabama and he's scum, which is ludicrous arguments when you look at our list of candidates. The sad thing is, what if we hire Strong or whoever and their terrible? We fire him in 3-4 years after bad seasons. At least Petrino can win in the SEC for sure, because he's done it. So he's a scumbag, but:
He wins
He wins in the SEC
He wins with 3* players.
We would have full control of his contract after his past
Experienced head coach

It just doesn't make sense at all, our University is starved for success, and we are willing to pass on a sure thing.

Friend I know with supposed ties to auburn says they're trying to do just that. Hire BP as OC and hire Smart as HC.

What does #2 on your list have to do with petrino?...

No chance. He would very likely be a very successful coach on the field, but I can't see how any rational university administrator or legal counsel would ever clear him as an employee, given his past issues. Very few coaches leave universities with no choice but to publicly pay a negotiated settlement to keep their affairs quiet. Forget it.

Auburn is apparently making him a primary target.

"I think the committee is doing everything that it can to not be painted into a corner and forced to hire Petrino," Tate said. "They have floated out some names but it became obvious early in the process that Petrino was going to be a leader for the job. He has the support from sidewalk fans on up the ladder and if they do not hire him, they will be forced to deal with some major fallout.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Who will take a chance on Petrino?

A Strong HC and Petrino OC package has to potential to be really appealing, depending on the make-up of the rest of the staff.

I don't see Petrino settling for an OC job while he still has head coaching options.

Also don't see a strong head coach who will be willing to hire a guy that has interviewed for other head coaches jobs behind people's backs.

It looks good on paper but actually working it out would be impossible.

yeah he is not the most morale cat around but Holy crap he can coach. Go back and look at the Arky Rivals recruiting classes compared to ours or anyone elses.... About avg of 6 in the SEC. He could dominate at UT

Morals are subjective and don't win football games. I couldn't care less about who the guy sleeps with. Whoever gets him is getting a winner.
