Bobby Petrino Lovers' Thread

Really? why?

because AU flew him down to talk to them while Tubbs was still the coach?

Because I knew a couple of guys from Louisville and had already heard all about the kind of guy Petrino was and the cesspool of a program he'd built. I thought he would be a disaster as an NFL coach, and he was.

Nothing to do with the Auburn thing. That's how coaching searches get done, except normally they're better about not getting caught.

really ? You want me to believe that?
You heard from a couple of Louisville guys? Really?

You were just disgusted to get a guy who had just taken a Louisville team to a 41-9 record in the previous 4 years? A feat like they had never known. He had just won 12 games and you were disgusted?

really?

I bet those "guys" you knew just hated him, they just hated the puke right? I mean what a scoundrel, winning 12 games and all. Yeah, that would suck. i remember back in '98 I was pissed at Fulmer. I remember telling others in Atlanta what a puke Fulmer was. everyone just wants to bash a coach when times are good, winning 12 games in a season, taking them to highs they never dreamed of.

come on man, dont try and sell me that crap...

he said many times he hated the NFL from the first day. Hes not going back as a HC.
As for college where is he going to goto that better? Who would outbid us for salary?
His Alma Mater, Caroll College? His home state of Montana?

Come on!

This guy! he can flat out coach some ball.

There are (or at least were; at least one is gone) two guys from Louisville at my wife's office who were mostly relieved that he was gone, even immediately after he'd taken them to the Orange Bowl. They predicted that the next coach was already screwed because of the mess he'd have to clean up. They were right.

please enlighten me. What mess?

Or do you just mean they way they fell flat on their face without him?

2006 BP wins 12 games
2007 Kragthorpe wins 6

2011 BP wins 11 games
2012 John L Smith wins 4 games

See the similarity?

The guy can coach.

he squeezes every ounce of talent from his players. thats why he wins at a high level even with mediocre talent.

After hes gone, the next coach cant win with mostly the same players.

Everyone agrees that he can coach. But what about his baggage? I couldn't imagine having him going to a recruits home and how the parents would react

I'm not arguing that he's not a great football coach, at least in the two areas of offensive X's and O's and dominating the lives of college kids. I'm just saying that he already had a reputation as a personal scumbag before he'd ever coached a game in Atlanta, and subsequent very public events have repeatedly borne that out. As a football coach, he'd be a good choice. But as a prospective face of the University, he's horrifying. You and I will never agree on this because I care about the reputation of the University and you don't. Simple as that.

I have a theory...
especially for you ATL guys (falcons)

He came to the Falcons, then (admittedly without class) dropped you like you were nothin and it was humiliating. How dare he leave us, the Atlanta Falcons, for the pathetic University of Arkansas Razorbacks.

You were humiliated...

Now, knowing the genius of a coach that he is, you say HELL NO, because
Your afraid of deja vu.

I guess I somewhat understand, but the difference is that I dont think he would do it. I believe TN is a destination school.

Simple question, what parent is going to encourage their kid would be coming to play for Petrino given what's happened at his last 3 stops? BP is and has been regarded as a scumbag everywhere he's been and left those programs high and dry. Putting that on the recruiting trail and as the face of the university would be a disaster.

Every Falcons fan I know wanted him fired, was disappointed that Blank was a chump and apparently wanted to keep him, and was glad that Arkansas hired away. Don't confuse our contempt for his gutless exit for disappointment in any way. He was a complete disaster in every possible way in Atlanta.

Ridiculously good coach. I'd rate him above Gruden in offensive knowledge and playcalling. Yeah, I went there. Really, birds of the same feather. Burn the midnight oil studying film in some relentless pursuit to conquer the game. Every where the guy has went he has went above and beyond the talent at his disposal. Face of a program, not so sure. No one is going question if he has integrity or not, because he clearly doesn't. He isn't the right hire, but I can say so much as this: If the dude ends up at Kentucky or any other team that we regularly face, we could be in some serious trouble. At least until ethics or violations come into question.

Not the best choice if you want a choirboy type.. Best coach available in the pay range UT most likely to offer... yeah...

Ha, it happens. I just figured it was just some word I didn't know.
Just waking up from falling asleep on the couch watching late night football.. Brain slow to get kick started. Happens when you get a little older..

Dudes a winner. He would divide the fan base though. I would be down if he didn't have the baggage he now has. Great coach, crap morals.

While character, morals and ethics are debatable, you know as well as I that there is not one other man that would come here and turn this thing around as quickly. There may be others who can, in the same way you "may" win the lottery, but Petrino is a hire you dont even have to question. A Petrino hire eliminates any questions of where we will be in three years if not two with respect to winning.

The other coaches who would also be a lock to get the same results will not come here.

There is alot to be said for timing, we have a chance to hire a homerun coach due to his indiscretions at Arkansas. If it werent for those indiscretions we would be in the same boat as the previous two coaching searches which was figuring out which college up and comer we want to roll the dice on.

Im ready for a hot shooter, tired of crapping out.
