Bonaroo 2011

He may have the best hip-hop album of the year, but that doesn't make him "unquestionably the best hip hop artist" of 2011...and B.o.B.? What the hell?

Look to what they've put out. How relevant they are right now. B.o.B and Kanye were the two most relevant hip hop artists in 2010. I'll stand by that statement.

It wouldn't bother me if they never had another hip-hop or rap artist at Bonnaroo. IMHO, the festival doesn't need them. Bonnaroo could have had Paul Simon and/or The Foo Fighters this year instead of Eminem, but chose Eminem in an effort to reach a different genre of fans. Bad move

They had a niiiice electronic lineup last year that they seem to have gotten away from this year. Which is unfortunate. The Sonic Stage kept going till like 6:30 in the morning last year and was all kinds of amazing.

Not necessarily disagreeing with you but RATATAT could very well be the single best electronic artist they've ever had. They are nothing short of incredible. Pretty Lights is really good too, STS9 is underrated and Bassnectar is wildly popular even though I've never really gotten into them. The overall electronic lineup may be down, but the headliners as far as that genre goes are pretty solid.

Kanye is an excellent producer who finally came out with another album comparable to his first one.

B.o.B is an okay rapper who knows how to use other artists to get himself on the radio.

Neither is the best hip-hop artist in the world. Lyrically, neither is close. Kanye's production makes up for it but if you're really defending B.o.B based on "Airplanes," then my WTF reaction has only gotten stronger. By those standards, Soulja Boy was relevant a couple years ago. I don't really even like Wiz Khalifa, but he's easily more relevant than B.o.B is or was.

Side note: I like 3000 better but if you're a Big Boi fan, check out his album's mashup with Brothers by the Black Keys. "Afraid of the General" is my favorite but it's an interesting mix overall.

I love RATATAT. But Deadmau5 is the best electronic artist they've ever had. And he has a craaaazy following.

1. B.o.B is the type of talent the game hasn't seen since 3000. And dude is prolific.
2. If you're bashing B.o.B because all you've heard of him is "Airplanes", then I would invite you to check out any or all of his 7 mixtapes. He even put one out in late 2010 (it's called "No Genre"...you can download it (and the rest of mixtapes) for free).
3. Explain how Khalifa is more relevant than B.o.B?
4. Soulja Boy was only relevant -- imho -- as somebody to laugh at.
5. For being an average rapper, B.o.B sure does get a lot of guest spots on other tracks. Here are a couple:
YouTube - B.o.B - Teach Me How To Dougie
YouTube - Tightrope (Wondamix) [Feat. B.o.B and Lupe Fiasco]
6. To be clear, B.o.B is not an average rapper.

P.S. -- If you haven't heard these tracks, then you need to know more about B.o.B.
YouTube - B.o.B - Watchers - Video
YouTube - B.o.B - No Mans Land
YouTube - Bobby Ray - Satellite - B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray
YouTube - B.O.B - Shoot Up The Station

And, to be clear, that is just a sampling. Dude goes deeeeeep with material.

.

I hate Kanye as a human being, and I think he is pretty terrible rapper. But he is untouchable as a producer, and his latest album is virtuoso.

I love both Big Boi and 3000 -- OutKast is my favorite group of all time, regardless of genre -- and haven't heard the mash-up. I will check it out. Thanks.

I've heard plenty of other songs from him but those were good. Dude isn't average. He may be the best from ATL since 3000, but not America in general. Mixtape Lil Wayne (ex: YouTube - Lil Wayne - Renegade (Freestyle)) was easily on that level, and I'll take Earl Sweatshirt over B.o.B all day. And 7 mixtapes isn't that deep with material. I know full well that all mixtapes are free...

As far as relevance, you're making me defend Wiz when I don't even really like his music. Speaking of mixtapes, these are the most downloaded ones ever.
DatPiff :: Popular Free Mixtapes
Wiz Khalifa: #1 of all time, #3, #6, #12, #20, #38
B.o.B: #37
Also, first week album sales:
Wiz: 197,000
B.o.B: 84,000
For being such a great rapper, B.o.B sure doesn't impress a lot of people. He's good, but there's no way he's better than Weezy or Earl or more relevant than Wiz.

in my opinion, rap/hip-hop doesn't translate well to live performances and i'm not really excited to see any of them.

(1) I believe it is when you're 21. Plus, it looks like he actually has 9.

(2) Those numbers are off, friend. I'm not sure what you were looking at, but Wiz's most popular mixtape is the 16th most popular of all time. Lil Wayne, for example, has 8 more listened to mixtapes than Wiz's top mixtape.

Either way, I will concede that Wiz's mixtapes do have more listens than B.o.B's. So maybe I underestimated Wiz a little bit.

(3) The first week album sales are correct. But B.o.B's album has subsequently gone gold. We'll see how Wiz's album sells going forward.

P.S. -- I wasn't trying to insult your intelligence by specifying that mixtapes were free. I didn't know how much into hip hop you were.

That wasn't the point. Those are the most downloaded ones, shown in order. The numbers for listens don't matter on that page and there's a separate page for the ones with the most listens. Either way, those were rankings for the most downloaded and he also has 2 of the top 3 in "Highest Rated."

Yeah, I thought after I posted that I probably assumed wrong there. My fault. :hi:

Absolutely ridiculous on so many levels. It seemed like every show I went to was incredible. So glad I finally got to see the Black Keys live.

I had a great time at Roo. Let's here some opinions.

1. 5 favorite sets?
2. Honorable mention sets
3. Favorite set by an act you were previously unfamiliar with?
4. Other acts that you heard for the first time and liked
5. Most disappointing set(s)?

I'll go:
1. Arcade Fire, Robyn, Deerhunter, Neon Trees, STS9 (not necessarily in that order)
2. Eminem, Black Keys, Florence and the machine
3. STS9 (by a mile...this was probably my favorite overall set)
4. Florence, Deerhunter, Amos Lee, Mavis Staples
5. Sleigh Bells, Decemberists

1. The Black Keys, Chiddy Bang, My Morning Jacket, Explosions in the Sky, J. Cole
2. RATATAT (just did the same set as last time I saw them), Atmosphere, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Pretty Lights
3. MMJ (I had a few songs, but was not expecting them to rock out like that)
4. Galactic, The Sheepdogs, Lionize
5. I was expecting more from the Superjam, and everyone on the Which Stage was kind of limited by it being the worst venue there. It hurt the Strokes some, and I wasn't at Lil Wayne very long but he didn't sound good at all.

3. I didn't get to see anyone that I wasn't familiar with. The lineup was so killer, there was literally almost nobody I wasn't familiar with anyway. There wasn't enough time in the day lol, so I'll have to go with The Gregory Brothers in the comedy tent. I knew about the Antoine Dodson song, and knew about the autotune the news site, but didn't know the band specifically.
4. See #3.
5. Eminem

Oh yeah, Explosions in the Sky was great, too. But, I only got to see a bit of their show, because I think it conflicted with The Strokes, who I loved back in 2001, so I had to see them for the nostalgia factor.

I tried to stay up for STS9, as I heard they were good, but I'm just too old.

******* tell me about it! I was PISSED Mumford & Sons got placed at Which Stage.

Yeah, Is This It by the Strokes is an awesome album top to bottom. I hated that they were at the exact same time. I left Explosions for the Strokes about halfway through, but I jogged back over to hear this:
