Border Wall Thread (Merged)

I agree with the trade deficit not being a bad thing. But if you look at the situation as a high stakes card game, who has the winning hand? Mexico needs the U.S. more than the U.S. needs Mexico. Do you disagree?

I reject the comparison to poker. Trade is not a zero sum game.

We have more leverage than them, but to what end? What is the deal that Trump is going to get? He's a protectionist. You guys just trust that he's going to get us a better deal? The man thinks tariff tax increases would be Mexico paying for the wall. He's a ****ing idiot.

Have you ever negotiated anything? You need the leverage to insure you get a better deal. Everyone on here knows you do not like the man. He is not an idiot. I do not agree with everything he does but our trade policies are crap and have been for decades. I think we look at things from a different prospective and will never agree. I believe in this country first and every other country falls into a place afterwards depending on their policies. I do not think you believe this way.

trump has lost his first negotiation, twitter diplomacy is a failure. The world isn't a boardroom , his word isn't final.

Which negotiation has he lost? Do you understand how negotiations work? Never said his word was final, said he was negotiating from a position of strength. You want him to fail, and he may do so, but he is the President at the moment.

What percentage of our exports go to Mexico? What percentage of their exports come to the U.S.? Which country would suffer most if there was zero trade?

Bottom line is we like cheaper goods, that has given rise to Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Costco to name a few.

Do we like fewer jobs? Should we worry about poverty in this country before we worry about poverty elsewhere in the world? Should we worry more about jobs in Mexico or in the U.S.? Our trade policies of the past 50 years have a great affect on these issues.

Exports aren't the only thing that matter. Not getting the imports will hurt us. Why do you not factor that?

trump is headed for a power struggle between the legislative and the executive branches, reps on both sides have been hinting about the use of executive powers for the past few years.

Protectionism isn't a way to treat poverty here. It's one of the best ways to make poverty worse.

I do factor not getting imports. The leading imported product frome Mexico is autos. Followed by machinery, fuels, medical equipment. We can produce much of this in the U.S. We do import agricultural products from Mexico. I am not saying it wouldn't hurt, but who has the leverage in negotiation? We will continue to trade with Mexico but it will not be as currently constructed.

If the tariff drives down demand for imports, then how in the **** is the tariff tax going to pay for the wall? Remember, this is a proposed solution for paying for the wall...

You guys just say the first possible explanation that comes to mind. Maybe that's why you identify with Trump?

Read the part about bringing them to the table to negotiate.

If you own a business and your biggest customer is about to choose another supplier and this will bankrupt your business then you try to renegotiate a deal to keep that customer.

Mexico is the supplier and the United States is the consumer. The prices rise because of tariffs and smart people buy from another supplier. Mexico faces bankruptcy and they come to the table to renegotiate a deal to save their economy.

Poor people can buy very little. It's true America has lost jobs through trade agreements and it's also true the majority of jobs lost is due to automation and robots.

Bully diplomacy simply won't work.

Bro, those don't get replaced over night and it's all going to be more expensive. If producers think the trade war isn't going to last, they aren't likely to start manufacturing medical equipment here. They are more likely to wait it out.

It will cause more economic harm to the US, but we are wealthier so we would be able to outlast them....cool, we can win a trade war. What is the benefit and at what cost?

Have you ever negotiated anything? There is never going to be a 20% tariff unless Mexico wants to tank their economy. They will come to the table with Trump and make concessions regarding the wall / border enforcement.

I think huff has a very high IQ and is very book smart, but has trouble with real world problems. His EQ is very low like most liberals.

Fact most millionaires graduated with a C+ GPA but have a very high EQ

My customer would obviously be leaving me for a better deal. What you don't seem to understand is that the US isn't getting a better deal elsewhere and Mexico knows this, so how much leverage do we really have?

Are you implying he's a social misfit or has a hint of antisocial behavior ....... sounds like you think he'd make a great politician

It is about negotiations. Do you think Mexico is going to say goodbye to U.S. trade? Really?

The U.S. also imports 30% of its fruit from Mexico.
