Border Wall Thread (Merged)

I think huff has a very high IQ and is very book smart, but has trouble with real world problems. His EQ is very low like most liberals.

Fact most millionaires graduated with a C+ GPA but have a very high EQ

Link?

I am not a liberal. I am a free market, small government, constitutionalist, libertarian with formal education in economics.

I am telling you basically every conservative, economic mind is on my side on this one. There is nothing liberal about my position. You guys are siding with the big government, special interest shills.

My customer would obviously be leaving me for a better deal. What you don't seem to understand is that the US isn't getting a better deal elsewhere and Mexico knows this, so how much leverage do we really have?

Well they bankrupt their country. There is a small thing in negotiations called win-win read about it sometime it may help you one day

I reject the comparison to poker. Trade is not a zero sum game.

We have more leverage than them, but to what end? What is the deal that Trump is going to get? He's a protectionist. You guys just trust that he's going to get us a better deal? The man thinks tariff tax increases would be Mexico paying for the wall. He's a ****ing idiot.

If Mexico gets into a trade war with the U.S. they will get China to back them up at the WTO.

It is about negotiations. Do you think Mexico is going to say goodbye to U.S. trade? Really?

Mexico is sitting there asking themselves the same question about us. It will hurt both of us is the point. It doesn't matter if we have more leverage than them. We are definitely going to hurt ourselves to possibly get a better deal.

There is a reason why they are economists and not millionaires

So we accept how things are? Should a business or a country in this instance not try for a better deal? Do you consider NAFTA a success?

We are not talking about business. We are talking about the macroeconomy. Economists aren't supposed to be experts at making businesses successful. That's not what they study. One thing that they do study is how economies react to policies, which has nothing to do with the expertise a successful business man has acquired.

We are talking about economics, not business. Your point is moot.

No. I am saying it's a bad move to shoot ourselves in the foot in order to try to negotiate a better deal.

I don't think we are shooting ourselves in the foot, but we can just disagree on this point. Do you think NAFTA was a success? Also, could you explain your position about protectionism creating more poverty? I am interested in your viewpoints.

You said yourself the decline in exports and imports would hurt us. Are you walking that back? How is that not shooting ourselves in the foot?

I am looking more long term. Maybe shooting our big toe? Not looking for you to be defensive, just honestly wanting your opinion. It is ok for people to have differing opinions and still have civil discussions.

But you're just guessing that we'd end up with a good long term result. You have no idea what Trump is trying to/will negotiate.

The Smoot Hawley tariff compounded the problem of the Great Depression moreso than any other single action.

You are playing craps with dice that are on fire.

Has Mexico written that check yet to our negotiator in chief or has this buffoon painted himself into a corner?

Do you know the future without guessing? If so I have many more questions for you.

Mexico told trump to go pound sand last night. Mexico's Economy Minister said they will first respond to any tariff or tax by taxing the import of U.S. high fructose corn syrup and will go from there.

What are you talking about? This is totally hypocritical.

I am saying don't shoot ourselves in the foot.

You are saying shoot ourselves in the foot because we will be better off in the long run.

I am not the one whose position is dependent on a future condition.
