What are you talking about? This is totally hypocritical.
I am saying don't shoot ourselves in the foot.
You are saying shoot ourselves in the foot because we will be better off in the long run.
I am not the one whose position is dependent on a future condition.
Mexico told trump to go pound sand last night. Mexico's Economy Minister said they will first respond to any tariff or tax by taxing the import of U.S. high fructose corn syrup and will go from there.
This bozo just whiffed badly on his first real test. My preteens have negotiated deals with more expertise than this.
Southgate keeps chirping about "negotiating from a position of strength' while failing to recognize that the human cheeto has made a promise that he is in no position to enforce and the realization is slowly washing over him.
Bush league... Expect a flurry of unrelated attack tweets to distract the sheep from this titanic failure.
How am I being hypocritical? You said I was guessing about the future. I agree. We all are guessing about the future as none of us knows what tomorrow will bring was my point. If you want to have a civil discussion fine. If you want to be combative and condescending fine. I can have a discussion with someone whose opinion is different.

Stop being so sensitive. This is pretty civil, especially for an internet argument.
My position is don't shoot yourself in the foot for a gamble. I don't need to know the future in order to know this is responsible thinking. You need to have a pretty damn good idea of what the future holds before you justify shooting yourself in the foot, IMO.
Didn't realize I was being sensitive. I will tell my wife you said so. My opinion is the status quo sucks. I choose to have a different take on things than you. Our trade deals benefit our trading partners much more than ourselves.
We will have trade deficits because we are a consumer society but we can be more balanced than we are currently.
What is your evidence that the deal is better for our partner and why is that a bad thing if the deal is good for us? How will a trade war fix the status quo when trade is not the problem?
Trade is balanced. There are two components to trade and you are only focusing on commodities. Our trading partners tend to buy less goods from us, but they have to use those $ for something so they use them to invest in our economy, which means jobs, development, innovation, etc.
So how does that solve anything? Your hypothetical result means:
- no tariff tax to pay for wall
- we're still importing
- we're now paying more
It makes many things worse without making anything better.
The point is Mexico can not afford to say no. We hold most of the cards. If we don't buy from them we can import elsewhere. The prices coming from Mexico under NAFTA are not lower than imported prices. The benefit was that we supply the raw materials and make profits doing it. Without that factor in place its a bad deal for the USA.
It's hard for me to wrap my mind around the thinking of Liberals. We are a sovereign Nation or so I thought so if we want to to build a "Great" Wall to keep out criminals and people breaking our laws by entering our country illegally then why is that wrong?
So the Mexican people don't want us to build the wall, well tough! I thought we lived in the United States not the United States & Mexico we shouldn't care what they think or want. Same goes for the precious snowflakes still crying that their King is no longer in charge.

I wonder how much it would cost to create a database of legit workers and jail employers who hire illegals? Cut the head off the snake so to speak...
If there was a hint I'd be thrown in the clink for hiring an illegal, I'd trace their lineage back to Australopithecus before bringing them on.
Do you believe our economy is ok at the present time? Do you think trade has any affect on our economy? Do you think we invest in Mexico? If we did not invest in Mexico, would their economy be better or worse? If they did not invest in our economy, to what extent would that affect us?

trump's primary concern is trump and that won't change.
Trade is not what is wrong with our economy. Our partnership with mexico is only helping.
