Border Wall Thread (Merged)

It works great against people who have no intention of breaching the wall and who are willing to undergo the security procedures required to be let inside.

I'm pretty sure all the men with guns deter the breaching of the wall.

Right. What happens when those guns are inevitably turned inwards at citizens wanting to leave?

Ahhh yes. I remember reading about this on a website. I read it right after I read about Bigfoot and aliens.

I'll be honest, it has crossed my mind that our own country men (military) could possible turn against us from orders of a rogue government.

Then I started to talk and listen to the men and women who wear that very same uniform. I became even more proud of these soldiers and marines.

I will say though, if enough wars are started all over the world and our armed services are scattered across the globe, I could still see this hypothetical happening.

It would then be up to us, as Americans, to do our due diligence.

I wasn't coming at it from an Alex Jones' style conspiracy.

What's the saying about those willing to give up freedom for a feeling of security deserve neither?

I thought the Patriot Act was a good idea. Then Obama comes along and abuses the data collection and warrant less surveillance portions. Now here's Trump, who is clearly unstable, wanting to militarize the border with a ****ing ally. All because he and a bunch of his supporters are scared of a few migrant workers taking produce handling jobs from some mythical group of Americans who would jump at the opportunity afforded by picking tomatoes in 100 degree heat.

If you say it's to stop criminals, please. The war on drugs has been a colossal waste of resources.

Mexico is as much an ally as the raging alcoholic uncle who steals from everyone and can't stay out of jail is a member of the family.

So, your solution is to post an armed guard at your doorstep and shoot your uncle dead just because he wanted some of your mom's potato salad?

Why inevitably?

It was a bit of hyperbole on my part, but walls are far more effective at keeping things in than keeping them out.

You are out of touch with reality if you think it's a "few"; more so if you believe it's just the agricultural sector. What's gonna happen is your children and grandchildren will have no options for high paying employment open to them if they aren't the top of their class. Latino's have proven they are willing to bust their ass to participate in the American Dream. Why there cannot be a Mexican Dream (well .. there is .. see below) I do not know, except for the cartels and corruption.

How many high-skilled, high paying jobs, or even blue collar manufacturing jobs (like an auto plant) are being taken by illegals?

I don't believe a militarized border wall (or just a wall) is necessary. There are many other, softer and cheaper measures that can be taken to lessen the impact illegal immigration is having on the country. Trump and the GOP need to take on the Chamber of Commerce and employers who hire illegals. States need to end in-state tuition grants for the children of illegals. Illegals shouldn't be allowed to vote, own property, get driver's licenses or receive taxpayer funded medical care and other social welfare benefits.

Sadly, Trump and the GOP don't have the balls to suggest legislative solutions that will lead to millions of illegals self-deporting.

I don't care about the latinos coming here. For the most part they are looking for a better life. Some, do intend to return south after they make a **** load of money and live comfortable back home.

But, I listened to a podcast from a border patrol agent and the number of middle easterners coming across the border is staggering.

There has to be some form of security...

Wrong. The only people illegally crossing the border are good, hard-working Mexicans.

That's what we're told and no one would lie about it to serve their own agenda. Right?

Do either of you really think a wall is going to be effective in deterring criminals and terrorists from entering the country?

A proper wall, maybe. I'm not an advocate for a wall per se, but we need much better security that's for sure.

The leaked transcripts of a January 27th phone call that Donald Trump had with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto focused mostly on trade and immigration but turned very contentious when Pena Nieto continued to insist, as he had been doing publicly, that Mexico would not be paying for the wall. Trump then pleaded with the Mexican President to stop insisting publicly that Mexico would not pay for the wall, "You cannot say that to the press," Trump said on the call. "The press is going to go with that and I cannot live with that. You cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances." Later in this conversation, Trump said he was willing to say publicly he and Mexican authorities would continue to negotiate over the wall's payment, which he said, "means everything will come out in the wash and that is OK." However, in spite of this concession, Trump maintained that Pena Nieto remain quiet on the issue. "You cannot say anymore that the United States is going to pay for the wall."

Then, most surprisingly, in light of his constant campaign rhetoric on the topic of the Mexican border wall, Trump indicated that the wall was only important to him as a matter of scoring political points and that his constant discussion of it during the campaign was just a disingenuous ploy to fire up his base of support... Instead of saying he actually considered it a matter of importance to the country he revealed it to be nothing more than a political issue of importance only to him when he said this: "I am just going to say that we are working it out. Believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important thing we are talking about." ....so there it is. Trump's pet campaign topic was nothing more than a political ploy and a means of firing up his campaign crowds. He was appealing to his base of support through xenophobia, fear tactics and outright racism... Mexico is not paying for the wall - if there ever even is one built. (That was for the naive people here who believed otherwise - or even more pathetically, believed that this was even a matter of importance to Trump during the campaign.)

The he damn well better put something in place that equals or exceeds the effectiveness of a well designed AND installed physical barrier. If he doesn't do that he's a one term president. And there will be many so dosgusted they'll leave the Republican party for an Independant in 2020.

We could see a 4 party race. Socialists of some flavor led by Sanders. A more centrist. Republican nominee not Trump but an Independant Moderate Conservative and a Right wing Conservative.

The Greens and Libertarians will continue to put on their semi amusing two ring circus.

He's a one term president as he sits right now, polling less than 40% this early is unprecedented. I'm still not convinced he'll see the end of his current term.

Unless Trump's base of support is comprised of nothing but suckers, I don't know how his poll numbers don't tumble even more after this... He discussed the Mexican border wall at literally every campaign rally last year while always insisting that Mexico would pay for it and just one week after he is inaugurated he tells the Mexican President, "Believe it or not, this is the least important thing we are talking about..." He is a phony.
