The leaked transcripts of a January 27th phone call that Donald Trump had with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto focused mostly on trade and immigration but turned very contentious when Pena Nieto continued to insist, as he had been doing publicly, that Mexico would not be paying for the wall. Trump then pleaded with the Mexican President to stop insisting publicly that Mexico would not pay for the wall, "You cannot say that to the press," Trump said on the call. "The press is going to go with that and I cannot live with that. You cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances." Later in this conversation, Trump said he was willing to say publicly he and Mexican authorities would continue to negotiate over the wall's payment, which he said, "means everything will come out in the wash and that is OK." However, in spite of this concession, Trump maintained that Pena Nieto remain quiet on the issue. "You cannot say anymore that the United States is going to pay for the wall."
Then, most surprisingly, in light of his constant campaign rhetoric on the topic of the Mexican border wall, Trump indicated that the wall was only important to him as a matter of scoring political points and that his constant discussion of it during the campaign was just a disingenuous ploy to fire up his base of support... Instead of saying he actually considered it a matter of importance to the country he revealed it to be nothing more than a political issue of importance only to him when he said this: "I am just going to say that we are working it out. Believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important thing we are talking about." ....so there it is. Trump's pet campaign topic was nothing more than a political ploy and a means of firing up his campaign crowds. He was appealing to his base of support through xenophobia, fear tactics and outright racism... Mexico is not paying for the wall - if there ever even is one built. (That was for the naive people here who believed otherwise - or even more pathetically, believed that this was even a matter of importance to Trump during the campaign.)
