Unless Trump's base of support is comprised of nothing but suckers, I don't know how his poll numbers don't tumble even more after this... He discussed the Mexican border wall at literally every campaign rally last year while always insisting that Mexico would pay for it and just one week after he is inaugurated he tells the Mexican President, "Believe it or not, this is the least important thing we are talking about..." He is a phony.
That conversation is so telling to anyone who will process the underlying meanings. You have to give it to Trump....he knows how to manipulate his core base. Case in point, his speech last night in West Virginia. The leaked transcripts of a January 27th phone call that Donald Trump had with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto focused mostly on trade and immigration but turned very contentious when Pena Nieto continued to insist, as he had been doing publicly, that Mexico would not be paying for the wall. Trump then pleaded with the Mexican President to stop insisting publicly that Mexico would not pay for the wall, "You cannot say that to the press," Trump said on the call. "The press is going to go with that and I cannot live with that. You cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances." Later in this conversation, Trump said he was willing to say publicly he and Mexican authorities would continue to negotiate over the wall's payment, which he said, "means everything will come out in the wash and that is OK." However, in spite of this concession, Trump maintained that Pena Nieto remain quiet on the issue. "You cannot say anymore that the United States is going to pay for the wall."
Then, most surprisingly, in light of his constant campaign rhetoric on the topic of the Mexican border wall, Trump indicated that the wall was only important to him as a matter of scoring political points and that his constant discussion of it during the campaign was just a disingenuous ploy to fire up his base of support... Instead of saying he actually considered it a matter of importance to the country he revealed it to be nothing more than a political issue of importance only to him when he said this: "I am just going to say that we are working it out. Believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important thing we are talking about." ....so there it is. Trump's pet campaign topic was nothing more than a political ploy and a means of firing up his campaign crowds. He was appealing to his base of support through xenophobia, fear tactics and outright racism... Mexico is not paying for the wall - if there ever even is one built. (That was for the naive people here who believed otherwise - or even more pathetically, believed that this was even a matter of importance to Trump during the campaign.)
Can you give conclusive, irrefutable evidence that it won't?
No.
Does the wall Israel erected prevent terrorist attacks?
Did the Maginot Line protect Belgium from the Blitzkrieg?
A determined person, whether a criminal or a dirt farmer, will find a way to circumvent a physical barrier. In other posts in this thread, I've provided low-cost, legislative alternatives to a militarized border with an ally.

It leaves one with a toxic mixture of sadness, amusement, pity, bitterness, embarrassment, bewilderment, and disgust.
"Build that wall. Build that wall. Build that wall."
"Who will pay?" "Mexico!"
"Who will pay?" "Mexico!"
"Who will pay?" "Mexico!"
"You bet your a$$ they will!" Cue maniacal applause and shouting.
This is one advantage to having a base of support comprised mostly of simple minded and uneducated people. They are easy to manipulate. One week after taking office, Trump tells the President of Mexico that building the wall is not really important to him... Will his base care? Of course not.

Calling the people who want a wall dumb. Liberal smugness has been working phenomenally. Keep it up, Dems

When Trump first brought up the idea of the wall he thought it would play pretty well with a number of idiot supporters. Only he underestimated just how many idiots there were out there. This legion of fools turned "build the wall" into a battle cry. Now it's hanging around his neck like an anchor. He had and has no choice but to stick with it.
Fast forward to his conversation with Nieto. He admits that the wall was never important. Only the politics of it really mattered.
Every one of you morons got played and you damn well know it.

..."Israel began construction of a security barrier along section of the West Bank in 2002 at the height of the Second Palestinian Intifada, or terrorist war of shootings and suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians. That intifada was launched after PLO leader Yasser Arafat rejected an Israeli offer of a Palestinian state during U.S.-mediated negotiations in the summer of 2000.
Upon the completion of a significant continuous section of the security fence in 2003, Israel already saw a marked decrease in the number of suicide bombers able to penetrate Israeli cities. "...

President Trump is right. I built a wall along Israel's southern border. It stopped all illegal immigration. Great success. Great idea 🇮🇱🇺🇸

Got a source other than Bannon's former home?
As much as I like Netanyahu, I think he's being a bit disingenuous.
Trump wants to build a wall on U.S. property, and then riles up his stupid base by claiming he's going to make Mexico pay for a U.S. wall--and then tries to get the Mexican leader to stop expressing his Mexican viewpoint because the truth might hurt Trump politically when people realize that he talks out of his backside! It's so very Trump!
I don't care about the latinos coming here. For the most part they are looking for a better life. Some, do intend to return south after they make a **** load of money and live comfortable back home.
But, I listened to a podcast from a border patrol agent and the number of middle easterners coming across the border is staggering.
There has to be some form of security...
