Brad Stevens

Stevens is a sure thing just like Saban was a sure thing.

Would you rather have coach K in 1985 or coach K today? That question was rhetorical...it's obviously the former.

I like the odds of him being a great coach but I am not willing to call him a sure thing after just 4 seasons of coaching.

I believe that there is a salary figure that would bring him to UT. I would just like to know what it is.

1) It's a lateral move in Div.1
2) He would be leaving a better program then the one he would be inheriting (NCAA violations)

There's no motivation, whatever money UT throws at him, Butler will likely match.

I don't agree that it's a "lateral move" in any regard. Butler has 4,000 students, Tennessee has 26,000+ (6x as many)

Butler is a member of the Horizon League, with Wright State, Green Bay, Cleveland State, etc. and Tennessee is a member of the SEC, the nation's premier conference.

Butler's athletic budget is $11M in TOTAL, with $1.7M going toward bball. Tennessee's athletic budget is $71M (+$60M), with $6.1M going for men's bball (+$4.4M).

Butler played three games on national television (ESPN, CBS) during their regular season (and this, after an appearance in the championship game, just the year prior). Conversely, Tennesse played in ten (+7).

Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse was built in 1928 and seats 10,000 people - which recent renovations actually reduced it from 15K seats - TBA was built in 1987 and seats 24,000+.

Butler has no practice facilty, while Tennessee has the recent Pratt Pavilion.

This is not directed solely at you, Okla - but to anyone who continues to believe that Tennessee lacks the means to lure Stevens away from Butler, or that this is somehow a step down from the "lofty" heights of Butler's program - which is, frankly, delusional. It likely speaks more to our lack of faith in the UTAD doing it, than Butler's ability to prevent it.

It shouldn't be a matter of can Tennessee get him, but will they - and when? Given the choice between the two schools battling for him, which side would you prefer to be on?

2.5-3x his current salary would surely make him listen.

I agree with Tenacious. This could be done if UT want him bad enough, like bama want Saban.

I don't know what it would cost - but the equation to determine it would include both financial and (job) security considerations. The lesser one, the higher the other would need to be.

There is no way Butler could pay what Tennessee could pay.

Valid point. But by the time you "know" who they're going to be, its often too late (big program locks them up long-term).

If Coach K were to retire today, who would be some of the top coaches to replace him? How about Florida? Michigan St? Kansas? The truth is, Brad Stevens will be able to go anywhere he wants in 4-5 years, why settle for a very high risk move when he could stay in his comfort zone, and wait for the ultimate job.

I agree- no doubt! I think we hire someone in hopes of becoming one of the coaching greats. Most great coaches already have great jobs. This would most definatly be a move up for Stevens! Just not sure he is willing to take the risk.

Here's a novel idea: What if Stevens is happy with Butler? He seems to be doing pretty well there (we, after all, are sitting at home while he's on the verge of back-to-back final fours). He seems to like the school that gave him his first shot. He makes plenty of money.

More money, a larger stage, and better competition doesn't mean squat if the guy is content where he is.

Tony K, i believe it was, asked him about winning year after year at Butler, and the guy just didnt have the tone that sounds like he is where he wants to stay put at.

Content is probably not in his vocabulary- there is no doubt he will be looking for a bigger better stage to show his coaching abilities!

Hard to argue that this may not all be true.

Maybe he's perfectly content at Butler and has no apsirations to leave.

Thank you. I wanted to say that but couldn't have done it as well.

If a coach sees things that way he will never win the big ones consistently.

A good run in the tournament doesnt translate into recruiting success at a higher level institution.

Everyone is saying he's happy in Indiana, but if we bring the money we could get him in Knoxville. Too bad Cheek and Hamilton aren't willing to spend that much money.
