Being at the top of the list at Mizzou, and Purdue if Painter would have left isn't considered being "hot". I respectfully disagree.

Exacxtly. The Purdue chat boards are all upset that Martin is coming to UT in case they lose Painter. From what I have read, Martin sounds like a class act that has faced alot of adversity (cancer at age 26) with alot of character. THe more I read about him, the better I feel about this hire. All the naysayers need to read this guys bio before making judgement.

If Mizzou really wanted him they could have gotten him knowing our interest, and that would make sense for him to be on Purdue's list considering the connection between the two. All im saying is we could have done much better, and gotten a more proven coach.

what would peyton say!

What? Thats no fun. Knee jerk reactions made with no background facts is the shinzit!

:lolabove: Im just saying you have to admit there are better names out there than Martin, but I will give him a chance since he is taking a chance on us. I realize that Tennessee may not be the most attractive job to some considering we are under the NCAA's scope right now. So the fact that Martin is willing to come here knowing that risk says alot to me, and im willing to give him a chance. I'll wait to make my real judgment on him until after the season is over.

I don't understand why Hamilton wouldn't at least wait until after the tournament to try to get a big name. I don't understand why Hamilton refuses to hire anyone with more than 3 years of head coaching experience.

Why would a big name want to come here? Just fired a successful, popular coach that improved a program that is now going down the crapper because of that same coach. What's to like?

Come on guys, we are feeling sorry for ourselves. looking at the team he is inheriting with Cam being the best they got, unless scotty comes back we won't score over 40 a game. I am not sure we can win no matter who the coach is. I hope he is hell of a recruiter

6 straight NCAA tournaments 2 sweet 16 appearances and 1 elite 8 appearance in the last 6 years.

If Hamilton was trying to hire another guy like Pearl he failed. Has this guy ever been to the NCAA tournament as a head coach? It doesn't appear that he has. Seems like an odd hire to me. Hamilton might be more stupid than I thought he was if this was a make or break hire to save his job.

Just out of curiosity, how much of a salary are they going to pay Coach Martin?
Never mind, let me go look at the 1.3-1.5 per year thread.

Wow...I really hope he is a good salesman of the program because we just lost two pretty good recruits...Hammy might have nailed the last nail in a coffin for himself...I have read a lot but nothing makes me think we could not have thrown enough at a bigger name...Good luck Coach Martin! GBO

Welcome to the new coach. I'm not going to say it's a bad hire as only time will tell. I will say it is a surprise hire. I really hope he succeeds.

I still say Hammy should be fired. Not because of this hire, or at least not only because of this hire, but because he has yet to prove himself at being able to handle the ATHLETIC side of the athletic dept. Yes, he is a great fundraiser, but that's going to dry up if the wins don't start coming soon.

Martin is not a proven commodity. He may succeed, he may not. Don't get me wrong, I like the stats I've seen, but he's not proven at this level. I like Dooley, but he's still not a proven commodity. He doesn't have a winning record yet and who can be 100% certain he will work out. I don't really follow UT baseball, but I see many on here criticizing Raleigh. Hamilton has yet to hit a homerun with any of his hires.

Maybe I expect too much, but I think the UT AD should be held to a high standard and the current state of UT athletics does not sit well with me. Football is rebuilding after falling apart under the watch of Mike Hamilton. Basketball will now have to rebuild after the actions of Bruce Pearl, but, again, it happenned under Hamilton's watch. The common denominator is Mike Hamilton. It's time for him to go.

Even his PR skills are poorly lacking. He made a mess of the Fulmer ouster. He looked like a complete idiot after the Kiffin debacle. He submarined the basketball program two days before the tournament and drew criticism from every sports commentator I heard. He has not brought a good spotlight to UT. He has continuously left us looking bad to the rest of the nation. ESPN may or may not hate us, but if they do, Hamilton has provided them with lots of ammunition to use over the years.

I just believe Hamilton has left us with egg on our face too many times. I have no faith in him. IMO, he is not the man to be running our athletic department. I hope Cheek, or the BoT, or Haslam will come to the same conclusion and end this.
