ESPN said it's a solid hire

Said the same thing about Charlie Weiss at ND. Hows that working? They say that about almost every hire and most often when a minority coach is in the mix. Go ahead and call me racist but its just the truth not racism.

.....they say that when they have no reason to suspect that he will be an embarrassment to the profession.

They also said the same for Pearl.

It might work, it might not. But let's drop the notion that we were getting a "big name" coach to come into a situation with an AD on his way out and a NCAA investigation into the entire athletic program.

he could have just been fortunate and inherited some good players for a couple years.

I kind of doubt that was the case. The last coach was fired after a 17-16 season, and then Martin went 11-20 in his first season. Missouri State won 24 games in 2010 and 26 this year. If he has good players, it seems like he helped make them good.

I don't know what to expect, but he's here and I'm going to support him and hope he does well. Hopefully the NCAA will cut us a break now that we've sent Pearl to the guillotine.

i hate it, but i gotta admit things will probably return to normal now, or at least as they were when i was on campus in the late 60s and early 70s (the heyday of the sainted mears), when we were perennially the second best team in a thoroughly mediocre conference.

That's basically what we had with pearl?

Pearl brought energy the first few years here and then basically stopped improvement. Obviously excluding wayne and jp carrying us to the elite eight... but we were never the best team in the sec

Well why be so negative then?

Because it beats having to, you know, actually learn something about the guy, his record, his coaching philosophy - let alone actually see him coach a game at TBA - before commencing to b*tch, whine and moan.

It's the Tennessee Way.

:banghead2:

Look I can understand hiring an up and comer, I would be all for that. But Martin wasn't even a hot name out there. We had money to get the coach we really wanted, but instead we take the diamond in the rough approach again. I just dont see us doing well under this guy. You can hate on me all you want, but im just stating my opinion.

Being at the top of the list at Mizzou, and Purdue if Painter would have left isn't considered being "hot". I respectfully disagree.

Welcome Coach Martin.

Yes, everyone that is a know-it-all should just button their lip and welcome the new coach. These guys would gripe it they hired Adolp Rupp. Best of luck to the new coach and he could use some loyal support I'm sure, no matter who was hired. Sorry to see Pearl go but let's get behind the new guy.:good!:

interesting connection

Martin was part of two of those state titles at Lincoln, with Ellis in 1988 and without him in 1989. The team finished third in the state tournament in 1990. Martin had every intention of accepting a scholarship from the University of Illinois, the only school he was considering. But when the Deon Thomas recruiting controversy made headlines in the summer of 1990, it appeared Illinois would be penalized.

Martin spent a year in college prep school and went to Purdue instead.

After watching this I heard a lot of things that I like.

Setting the expectations for a winning program in spite of where you are currently.

The value of honesty.

Not the splash we were looking for, but I'm willing to give the guy his chance.

Welcome aboard CCM !

GBO !

thanks, very impressive human being....

Really? Tennessee has money to pay for coaches.. Hammy needs to stop acting like he has to find a coach within the week. The tourney isnt even over yet.. He has time. He needs to take some time, put up some cash, and find a big named coach who can turn us around. Rediculous.. (tell me how you really feel)

"Cuonzo is among the most promising young coaches in the game, and we are excited about the coaching ability, toughness and energy that he brings to our program," Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton said. "He has a proven track record of success as a head coach at Missouri State and an assistant at Purdue as well as an outstanding career as a college basketball player."

First MH quote that I have read.

If Mizzou really wanted him they could have gotten him knowing our interest, and that would make sense for him to be on Purdue's list considering the connection between the two. All im saying is we could have done much better, and gotten a more proven coach.

I don't understand why Hamilton wouldn't at least wait until after the tournament to try to get a big name. I don't understand why Hamilton refuses to hire anyone with more than 3 years of head coaching experience.
