But pay-for-play opens a whole other can of worms. If that happened there really would end up being like 2 superconferences with like 20-30 teams and everyone else would be boned. Smalltown/market teams would be boned. UT would be fine but the vast majority. As it is a LOT of FBS schools wont have the money to reach the 20mil limit. Football is the moneymaker of all sports. It’s actually a simple fix. NCAA allows pay for play, collectives write contracts that ties player to a school and then they can portal somewhere because NCAA would allow it but their contract and the collectives lawyers could get a TRO preventing it.
It’s actually a simple fix that the NCAA is too dumb too agree to.
That’s incredibly low rent on his part. You’re now the #1 corner on a Playoff contender team. You’re using the leverage that you have and now you’re quitting on your teammates. If he’s that low character then let him walk.Maybe. We gave him a deal after the season. If we redo it now because he threatens to leave, how many others are going to want to redo their deals? I would bet, we don't give him more and let him walk. It gets more costly every time you "renegotiate" with one guy because others will want more.
The guys we signed the last 3 recruiting classes? the guys we brought in through portal last couple years?Who do we have as corners? Not much there.
He's a starter on a top 10 defense in the nation.
Pay him like he's CB1
Ekeler went home. He also hadn’t just signed a new deal.::: Looks for thread expressing outrage when Ekeler Left :::
::: Looks for thread calling Ekeler a punk and greedy :::::
Hmmmmm, don't see one. Wonder why?
Coaches do it, now players can too. That's all I see here. It's a BIG pie and they want a slice.
And Nil Hasn’t already created this except there are no enforceable contracts yet…..But pay-for-play opens a whole other can of worms. This might shock people but, even at Kentucky their football program makes more money than their basketball program because 61000 is more than 20545.
2023 revenue comparison
Football: $50.4 million in revenue, including $19.2 million in ticket sales
Men's basketball: $32.1 million in revenue, including $22 million in ticket sales
Other revenue sources
Media rights: Football earned $15.1 million, and men's basketball earned $4.3 million
Royalties, licensing, advertisement, and sponsorships: Football earned $250,000, and men's basketball earned $74,000
Game programs, novelties, parking, and concession sales: Football earned $3.5 million, and men's basketball earned $1,015
For most Colleges in the nation Football and Basketball are the only profitable sports and they pay for all others from that plus donations. You step outside of the SEC/Big10 and those numbers drop a ton because they are propped up by conference payouts. The money Miss State got for bowl season and media rights this year is probably more than the average university's entire AD budget. Outside of the FBS most colleges survive on buy games. They have to go to the UT's and Bamas of the world and take 1-2 spankings a year to make ends meet.
You may be correct, but I think it’s a bit more complicated. Even high profile teams like UT have budgets. This kid realized he was playing a position of need and wants a raise. Tried to leverage the situation. If you or I walked into our bosses office and presented a similar demand we’d likely get shown the exit door.Maurice Couch would disagree. These kids have a right to sell their talent. Perhaps UT should step up and meet his demands. CB is a position of need. Let’s keep him here. Pay him.

Hell no. There is zero way we renegotiate with this punk at this point. Sends a terrible message to the team.
Ricky Gibson is a solid player, but he is originally a 3 star recruit that we poured resources into and carved out an opportunity for him to play for a CFP quality team. If he doesn't value what this staff has done for him then good riddance!
There is a line of thinking in the NFL to not break things off when they are good. There is no guarentee you will have success in another coach's system and in a different environment. Some guys in the NFL will chase the highest dollar once they are elligible to hit the market for the first time in free agency, but then fade into oblivion. They were good players, but didn't fit in well at their next stop. I think the same with college. Alot of guys trying to chase more money, but not considering the other factors. Here at UT, you are the starting CB for an SEC team that won 10 games and played in the CFP. You have a great opportunity to make your case to be drafted in the NFL. Chasing a few more dollars may negate you from that opportunity. And with being paid more, comes more expectations, and you have to do that in a new system. So is that really the route you want to go?
