not true at all. I was sitting in the stands during his tenure and knew people on the team. Just because opinions meet sometimes doesn't mean they're for the same reasons
I stopped reading midway through the 3rd page. The obvious issue here is that the OP can't differentiate between "more successful" and "better." Those aren't the same thing. It's possible to be a worse coach but still be more successful. Take RichRod. He was very successful at West Virginia. Nobody's going to mistake him for a beacon of excellence in the realm of coaching.
Citing O'Neill's tenure at UT as evidence of him being a good coach is a major failure.
I was in school then too and was excited as anyone to finally get a good coach. O'Neill was hot coming out of Marquette. I even went to see the crappy movie Hoop Dreams just because he was in it.
His coaching at UT was horrible. He inherited a crappy team and they continued to play crappy. His style sucked. His player motivation sucked. His PR with fans, donors, and the media sucked.
Even though the players were getting better thanks to his recruiting, the results were staying the same, which got him canned.

O'Neal took over programs that were in shambles when he arrived. Does he have a great record? No coach could have gone into the situations he has gone into and have a good record. O'Neal is a solid coach and recruiter. If he stayed long enough in any program, he would verify that. No question about his coaching. His personality does not fit every where and he has been in various coaching gigs because of that, not his coaching.
You know so much about the situation, yet you think he was fired. I'm trying to figure out wht Haslam flew Summit to Memphis to try and talk KO out of resigning and going to Northwestern if he was being fired. Odd behavior. Next time, at least know the facts if you are going to pretend to be well versed in them.Citing O'Neill's tenure at UT as evidence of him being a good coach is a major failure.

you either don't own a tv or started following UT bball in 2005
So clearly, you don't judge coaches by wins and losses. That's cool. I'll take the wins. You can have the notetaking and perceived technical excellence.

he came to a program coming off a 5-win season that no players wanted to come to. 4 years later that team was in the tournament. Was that because of Green? You didn't like his style and that's fine but he didn't have much else to use except to make them play hard. They were also more disciplined on the court than they are now
This coming from the person that failed Vocabulary 101. You can't judge a coach's ability to coach strictly on wins and losses. There are many factors that go into a Win or a Loss that have nothing to do with the coach's ability. Your statement was, "Bruce Pearl is a better basketball coach than Kevin O'Neill," but your thought was, "Bruce Pearl is a more successful basketball coach than Kevin O'Neill." Had you titled the thread the latter, nobody would have a problem. You, however, mixed two separate thoughts. That's why you're wrong. You're wrong because your basis doesn't support your claim.

This is absurd. I judge coaches by their success as most humans do. Are they 2 different things? Yes. Do they correlate? Apparently people on this board don't think so.

It was a mutual parting of ways - or getting canned. There was no one crying that he left.
And if it was his decision alone - then O'Neill is not only a bad coach but a stupid buffoon for leaving UT to live in Northwestern hell on his own accord. If he was such a great coach, why did he go to NW on his own accord to go winless in conference in his third season there?
There's no absurdity. You're arguing the point, "Bruce Pearl is a better basketball coach than Kevin O'Neill," with facts that support, "Bruce Pearl is a more successful basketball coach than Kevin O'Neill." Your facts don't support your claim. Talking about a coach's ability to coach requires talking about gameplans, etc.
No, the piece of trash you worshipped got canned. KO told Doug Dickey to shove the UT job up his ass. There was nothing mutual about it. I do like when you engage in discussion. You do a brilliant job of showing how little you really have a clue about. It was a mutual parting of ways - or getting canned. There was no one crying that he left.

Neither of which translated to wins. Like I said, maybe if he stays at UT he ends up being more successful. His career after UT doesn't indicate that. He took a bad northwestern team and got worse.
