Bruce Pearl Suspended

Bruce Pearl suspended first 8 games of 2011 SEC season GoVolsXtra

Pearl will be MIA from everything related to basketball during those eight games:

A letter from Slive sent on Thursday mandates that Pearl be "prohibited from participating directly or indirectly in any team or individual activities, including but not limited to practices, meetings, pre- and post-game activities, and the game itself.''

I don't think Ware/Jones would change their minds because Pearl was suspended just 8 games by the SEC. JMO though.

Does the NCAA factor in time already served? haha

yep. ask USC's basketball team how much its punishment was lessened by forfeiting OJ Mayo's season and barring themselves from the tourney for a year...neither of those would make sense at all in this case, but still worth mention

Mikey Saliva...makes Shakespeare's line about lawyers/barristers more relevant than ever. SEC office is like TSA, the White House & the Pelosi/Reed gang.

The part about finding another Pastner. No one on staff has any business head coaching for Tennessee.

Ok, I just mentioned its worth a shot. I mean someone has to coach those 8 games. No need to blast me for not being an expert on UT assistant coaches.

The problem is that everyone thought Buzz was a great coach with what he did at Tulsa and Appalachian St.
Who thought that? He took over an Elite Eight team at Tulsa and missed the NCAA Tournament and didn't do anything at Appalachian that pretty much every coach there since Bobby Cremins hadn't done. Got to love the revisionist history.

Yeah, I thought about that. Perhaps. At the same time, you are interjecting yourself into our car crashes on our forums, so it comes with the territory.

actually you don't seem to know much about UT at all

I dont claim to know a whole lot about UT. I know a lot about recruiting in the tri-state area (West TN, Ark, MS). I never represented myself as an expert in anything UTK.

Wrong on the Appy St.one

Since Cremins at Appy St., Cantwell and Apke had a losing record with no NCAA appearances or conference titles.

Buzz game in and won 4 conference Titles and had an NCAA appearance.

Also, that Tulsa team lost a few key players from that Elite 8 run and arguably should've made NCAA tourney, but went to NIT and won it.

Care to retract?

I love what Bruce has done here, but it's not like he won a national title, three final fours, and two SEC tourney titles while he's been here.

zjc, dude, are you disputing Pearl's success here? Argue against his mistakes with recruits, but to say that Pearl hasn't been successful just ruins your point.

There may be other "Pearl's" in the coaching ranks, but I can see another string of Greens and Petersons before we would land one of the same caliber as Bruce.

BTW, Gottlieb just said his sources told him the SEC did this to show the NCAA that with what UT did and what the SEC did to Pearl is enough and should bring closure to everything. If this is the case, Slive could actually be smart.

Why? Is there a rule that says you have to hire 3 incompetent coaches before hiring one that succeeds?

Not at all. Peterson does, will, and always has sucked. Look at Tulsa's program in the 20 years before they made the fatal mistake of hiring him. Look at what they've done since.

Fancher did just fine at Appy and Capel will, as well. You gave two examples of guys who didn't do well there, one of whom was a burnout just cashing a check. How many coaches have they had since Cremmins? It's a good SoCo job. Peterson's performance there was nothing special.

Just about everyone thought Buzz was a great up and coming coach... well I guess except you! That's all we heard when they hired him! Just like when we got Wade Houston! Going to be a great coach and really he can really recruit... his son, that is. That's about all we ever got out of Houston.

If we fire Pearl, then the next coach we hire will be another up and comer, like Houton, O'neal or Buzz and we've seen how good those types of hires are. We've had about a 25% sucess average there. Of course, we could end up with an old has been like Jerry Green... Yeah, I want to go back to those days... NOT!

We're stupid if we don't keep Pearl.

I take it that the ncaa was gonna shut down the program and slive stepped in to help ut out. Which means there is a lot more to come. Let's face it....Bruce really screwed up on this one.

Sure we can fire Pearl, roll the dice, and maybe come up with as good as or better coach. We also may end up with another Buzz Peterson, Jerry Green, Wade Houston, etc. It's a crap shoot no matter what anybody says or thinks. The problem with this isn't whether or not there are coaches out there, but whether anyone can say, without question, that there is a coach out there who has never cheated and/or lied.

Yeah, look at all the Greens and Petersons out there making 2.5 mil per year. No way paying a competitive salary helps you avoid getting the same kind of guy you hired shopping in the bargin bin.
