Bryan Harsin Fired

He knew what he was getting into.

Sometimes I wonder if coaches from outside the SEC even understand what it's like. I really don't think Harsin had any idea what he was stepping into. It's clear he didn't understand that Auburn is basically run by three boosters, especially Louder and Rane. You might be able to get away with not sucking up to the boosters at Boise State but it doesn't work that way at Auburn. It's my understanding he didn't regularly travel to Montgomery for some dedicated ass-kissing. That's being clueless.

Nobody likes being fired, but I'm sure he'll be able to find solace spending the $9.5 million after taxes.

Because of my years in the Navy I have friends from all over. Some went to Southern Cal, another to UDub (as they call Washington), Mich. State, Michigan, etc. They all talk like it's the same everywhere until I get them here for a big game. My son-in-law is a Big Ten grad and would always say that the SEC wasn't any different. Then I got him to Neyland and he basically said "Holy Crap, you people are crazy." Point won.

Harsin was a horrible fit from a culture standpoint. Good coach and he will rebound out West somewhere IMO.

I dont think there is any way they don't go the good ol' boy route this go around with their boosters.

I am thinking they strike out on a few higher profile guys like Ruhle and Kiffin, too much push back on Freeze, and they end up with Kevin Steele and some hotshot up and coming OC.
They’re going to have to find a coach that is comfortable with sharing playcalling duties with the boosters.

Many people from west coast, rust belt, and NE fail to factor in how poor the south and much of what we now call the southwest was from 1865 until after WWII. We did not have major league pro teams down here and the college programs became a source of state and local pride unlike other parts of the country.

And to think, none of this happens if Bigsby had just stayed in bounds.
He's still fired yesterday even if Auburn beat Alabama last year. That is of course a huge game but isn't enough by itself to keep a coach, assuming he still lost all the other games he lost. Auburn looked like a dead program from the jump this year.

I've wondered about the impact of the Alabama game myself. Suppose the game goes into overtime and Harsin pulls out the trick play in the first overtime to win the game - he's a hero, Bo Nix is a hero. They go to a better bowl. Even if they lose that bowl, the number of coaches and players jumping ship after the season goes down and the 'scandal' in the spring doesn't happen.

I think his recruiting still would have been terrible but if Nix stays, they probably win at least 1 and maybe 2 more games at this point. People would be grumbling but not revolting. Ultimately, I think he's fired after Year 3 but losing that Bama game shaved off a year. JMO. I think he goes back to Boise State eventually.

Not a chance. Auburn doesn't fire a coach who has a win over Bama in the most recent Iron Bowl.

Nix was injured. Finley may have been a hero, but Nix probably still transfers. The entire Nix family dislikes Harsin.

So are they going to go through the same deck of cards that we did during our recent coaching search or is there something new and exciting out there that I’m not aware of? We got oh so lucky 😂

I think the bolded part is pretty presumptuous, and I like @bamawriter but he's flattering himself a little too much by thinking that one game changed the entire trajectory of Harsin's time at Auburn 😎. He'll say that Auburn has never fired a coach after winning the Iron Bowl, which to the best of my knowledge is true, but that's also because Auburn only ever wins the Iron Bowl when they have a really good team/season that year. I'm not sure they've ever won the Iron Bowl when they have a bad or mediocre team. I don't think there's ever been an instance where Auburn has struggled coming into that game, tthe coach is on the hot seat, and saves his job with a win over Alabama because they've never really beaten Alabama in that situation.

That team had internal issues even before they started losing towards the end of the season. Harsin kind of out of nowhere fired Cornelius Williams after 4 games. Boosters supposedly didn't like Harsin from the jump.

Definitely true and he didn't have the common sense to hire some coordinators that have SEC experience. I got the feel that after the crap in the Spring, Harsin just "quiet quit". I was shocked Auburn didn't fire him then. Hard to believe that Harsin and Heupel came in at the same time. Can you think of 2 programs that have diverged that much in that short of a time?

The only reason they didn't fire him in early 2022 is because their lawyers told him they didn't have a good case to firing him for cause. Now, it isn't like Harsin's buyout was drastically reduced after just one year, but it came down some plus they have a second bad season to point to.

Harsin's single dumbest move while at Auburn, by far, was not retaining Rodney Garner. I thought that at the time and even more with hindsight. How fortunate for us...

Good point. I'm so freaking old that I can remember before the creation of the Falcons, the Dolphins and the Saints. There wasn't a pro team south of Cincinnati and east of the Mississippi. The Dolphins were great for UT, they signed Frank Emmanuel in the 2nd round and a couple of Vols as free agents. I remember that both the free agents took their $50k signing bonuses and bought motorcycles.

If you think Kiff wouldn't accept the Auburn job just to he a PITA to Saban, your out of your damn mind.

Saban has 2-4 years left. Kiffin is coming up on a second straight year opportunity to spoil Saban's season..... I don't forsee Kiffin being able to build up Auburn's roster in one offseason to go toe to toe with Saban and Bama. That isn't saying Ole Miss is equipped to, but his team last year and this year have rosters light years ahead of Auburn now and what can be done in one season.

I wonder, if Kiffin goes to Auburn, would Mississippi get a coach like Jeff Lebby? It’s been a bad year at OK though. He’s familiar at Ole Miss too.
