BTO’s Ole Miss Postgame Report

I thought Nkamhoua played well tonight, he just was saddled with foul trouble all night. It limited his effectiveness. He's really our second best player with Jo out, so he really needs to be playing 30 minutes a night. He does need to rebound better, if he's going to play that much (certainly better than tonight at least).

If Jo does come back, at least part of me thinks we can just bench Uros completely. Awaka is more than capable of handling 7-10 minutes for us. It just gives larger roles to Aidoo and Nkamhoua.

Phillips and Key just need to find their rhythm for us to be elite. Key is getting good looks, at some point he just needs to hit them. Phillips just isn't getting the same looks he was earlier in the season. We need to find a way to get him that foul line jumper he's so good at, or some kind of back door cut going towards the rim.

Mashack and Zeigler had good games, and it had almost nothing to do with the offensive end. Zeigler at least chipped in with free throws. Aidoo was really good on both ends. He played 29 minutes tonight, and might have to keep playing about that much.
Nkamhoua cannot keep disappearing on the boards and still be considered our second-best player. Rebounding should be his forte’ at 6’9” and his physique. He’s just not willing to battle inside.

Expounding on bullet point 3........... Aidoo, Awaka and Nkamhoua all have the potential to become double figure scorers consistently in the post.

Expounding on bullet point 5........... Aidoo should replace Plavsic at the center position on Saturday as he got 13 boards and 8 points to go with 3 rejections tonight.

Solid road win at a place that has been historically tough for us to win at on a consistent basis.

Yeah, and Aidoo got better as the game went on. He will continue to improve with more minutes and more confidence. Some guys prefer coming off the bench, but I would be curious to see what he does as a starter.

It depends on what Uris you get. He’s played well in multiple games this year. And when he’s playing within himself, he’s pretty dang good. The offense flows well when he’s distributing the ball in high low situations and off of high screens. He’s gotten much better at finishing (although I wish he would dunk more). His on ball post defense is pretty dang good too. Problem is, his emotions get out of hand and then you get what you got last night. Before he lost it at Arizona, he was ballin. He was incredible against Gonzaga too. There’s a place for him to get as many minutes as he wants. He just has to keep himself under control which seems to be a major issue for him.

And a bunch of dolts in the in game thread said he “sucks”. Barnes thinks otherwise.

Given he's publicly dressed him down (and indicated he's been upset with him a while) and yanked him quickly yesterday after 3 bonehead plays, he's not exactly thinking he's awesome right now.

Why the ongoing need to single out Uros for poor play? He’s inconsistent game to game and CRB tends to adjust his minutes accordingly. Uros is limited athletically and is a role player yet you guys want to view him as something much more and then put him down when he fails to meet those unrealistic expectations.

On the year:
Nkamhoua 330mins 141pts 63rbds 26to 12blk
Aidoo 183mins 51pts 57rbds 8to 11blk
Plavsic 158mins 56pts 47rbds 12to 3blk
Awaka 76mins 25pts 41rbds 4to 3blk

It seems pretty clear that at best Plavsic is the 3rd best big of the group, and very likely especially of late the 4th best as Awaka has played better. Add in the fact that Awaka has 3.5 years of eligibility left and is a true freshman as compared to Plavsic having 1 year left and is already a 5th year senior and I think it’s fair for folks to want to see Plavsic slide to the back end of that group and take that role. Nobody is saying they want him off the team or never to step foot on the floor again, but there’s quite a bit of evidence to suggest that he is our 4th best post option right now and typically teams don’t start both halves with a 4th best guy at a position starting on purpose.

If you want to dog on someone, why isn’t Phillips top of the list? He’s 10X more athletic than Uros with NBA potential yet he’s done nothing for a month or more. Why has CRB kept playing him instead of bumping up Awaka’s minutes since Awaka has been producing when given the opportunity? What about ON’s ignorant multiple fouls on failed block attempts? He’s a senior and due to regular mental mistakes he can’t keep himself on the floor? Key hasn’t been contributing lately either yet for some reason Uros playing 10 minutes a game is the problem.

And yet all of the guys you mentioned have still played better than Plavsic…Phillips has absolutely struggled but the lightbulb coming on for a true freshman with his talent level seems much more likely than a 24 year old in his 5th year of college basketball, don’t you think?

Which is why I recently said he’s better serving us as a 4 than 5, especially with emergence of Aidoo and Awaka and then depth from Plav.

Asking a 24 year old senior 7 footer to stop putting the ball on the floor and bringing the ball down to cancel out his height advantage, go up and dunk the ball instead of trying to "work a shot", and stop trash talking like he's all SEC isn't "unrealistic expectations". And to be honest, part of it might be to balance out that for some reason with Uros the bar seems to be so incredibly low that if he makes a bunny then suddenly he's shown "major improvement" to the Uros stans around here.

Plenty of people have dogged Phillips and yes he needs to step up but I think you'd agree even with his NBA potential, he's a true freshman. If by the end of January he's still struggling then you'll start to see the "bust" label put on him.

Last night, I said to my wife, “I wonder if Tennessee has ever been 10-2 in football and men’s basketball at the same time before,” as they were before tip off. Let’s hope they’re both 11-2 on Saturday morning.
Did your wife have a comment on your statement?

It’s funny how the same folks wanting to point to Barnes and say “obviously coach disagrees about Uros or thinks he’s best etc etc”, then also ignore Barnes ripping Uros publicly, benching him, and mentioning Jonas as a guy who’s been getting and will keep getting more first team reps in practice.

No way you label any true freshman a "bust". Not every player adapts to this level at the same pace. Kid just needs time for the game to slow a bit and his body to mature to take the grind of D1 basketball. Premature to say the least.

Uros is a wuss and a wimp?

We have some great fans.
He's a wimp when it comes to trying to score. He should be far more aggressive in the paint. What's the point of being 7 feet if you just kick it out all the time? This isn't about the fans. If he was 6 ft he'd be nowhere near a basketball court

I didn't say I would nor if it would be fair, but it will happen around here.

We need UP and everyone else to make a run. He does some good things and just needs to limit the stupid. Offense runs well when he plays within it and doesn’t try to be an enforcer. You can enforce without advertising it. We are 11-2 with him.

I get the dislike of UP. However,

there isn't another big on the team prepared to handle the physicality of the position defensively and he understands the game but really isn't an all-around player with great athletic prowess.

UP is a piece of the puzzle at that position and brings a different matchup presence.

Aidoo and Awaka are the future and love their potential!

I believe it was some mumble sound indicating apathy.
That’s funny. Ironically, the spouse of my choice, after living with me for 4 decades, has turned into quite the sports fan. It’s not unusual for me to quote some statistic or tidbit of information, and for her to say “yes, I knew that.” She had absolutely no interest in sports, to my knowledge, prior to 1981.

Aidoo 100% deserves as many minutes as he can take. He changes this team when he's on the floor. Uros is just kinda...there.

I'd like to see Awaka take whatever minutes are left at the 5. He doesn't have the occasional pass UP might dish, but he makes up for 10 fold in his hustle and rebounding ability. He clearly has the physicality as well to mix it up.

There's just no real reason UP should be on the floor besides us being in foul trouble. The experience they will get in SEC play and abilities of Aidoo and Awaka at the 5 give us a significantly higher ceiling.

Very excited about the future of our post play. Aidoo/Estrella and Awaka/C. Phillips frontcourt for quite a few seasons should be a massive improvement over ORN/UP.
