BTO’s Ole Miss Postgame Report

So, just curious. Are you good with ON’s rebounding, and frequent disappearance on the boards?
I’ve long said he needs to be better on the boards, just pointing out that his rebounding at the 4 is very much in line with our other 4’s rebounding which I’m not seeing criticized…

That’s funny. Ironically, the spouse of my choice, after living with me for 4 decades, has turned into quite the sports fan. It’s not unusual for me to quote some statistic or tidbit of information, and for her to say “yes, I knew that.” She had absolutely no interest in sports, to my knowledge, prior to 1981.

Oh, she loves sports. Coaches girls basketball. She just doesn't care about my trivial ruminations. ;)

So, a 5’9” guard and a 6’3” guard should be in the same realm? Right!!!

Nkamhoua cannot keep disappearing on the boards and still be considered our second-best player. Rebounding should be his forte’ at 6’9” and his physique. He’s just not willing to battle inside.
He's our second leading rebounder on the year, given the minutes he plays I'd certainly like to see that number climb a little more per game, but he's certainly not a poor rebounder. Rebounding in general for our team is just not a weakness (particularly with guys like Aidoo and Awaka around).

And a bunch of dolts in the in game thread said he “sucks”. Barnes thinks otherwise.
I wouldn’t say he sucks. He has his issues which I’ve posted about. He also has his moments where he makes nice passes and finishes around the basket. I think the issue many have is him getting the ball down low and not going up aggressively. I’d rather have him than now have him, but I prefer Aidoo. My biggest issue with Uros all along has been his antics. On the other hand, I like when he has his teammates backs. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Aidoo is finding himself but he does take some questionable shots.

Just keep winning. Vescovi and Uros catch too much hell. I've seen the youngsters falling all over themselves, lost in space, confused, and then they pull a rabbit out of the hat. We gotta become more consistent.

Uros kills me with the dribbling in the paint and the layups at point blank range. He could easily drop the ball straight in the basket but he ops for the backboard, where he shoots around 20%.

1. Winning on the road in league play is rarely easy, it’s the case every year and will be once again this year, many folks don’t get that but it’s absolutely the case. You take any conference road win you can get and don’t complain about it, that doesn’t mean there aren’t areas for improvement or things to improve on, but you also don’t try to draw a conclusion about how bad a team is because of a win on the road.

2. Santi was really good tonight and that was great to see given his early season struggles but strong performance against Austin Peay last time out. Makes you feel a little more optimistic that he will be the scorer we hoped that he would be and will be back to the consistent threat from 3 the nation has come to know.

3. With that said, can’t compliment much else offensively which is continuing to be an issue for this team. We fell further in KenPoms offensive efficiency, now down to 108.9 which is 53rd nationally, even with the #1 defense that’s just not good enough to get it done. We have to be a bit more balanced and have to find some consistent scorers, Phillips continues to struggle as does Key, we have no consistent offensive post threat and that’s obviously an issue as well. We don’t help ourselves by also missing too many free throws, right now the offense is just not good and we really need to find a way for it to improve.

4. Defensively we continue to be elite, which given the first 10-12 minutes of the game didn’t appear that way at all, but the final 25-30 minutes of defense was very good. Defensive rating on KenPom actually improved a tenth of a point and we still sit at an absolutely elite 80.7 defensive rating which is among the best there’s ever been. Because of this defense we will will a ton of games, but all it will take with this offense struggling is a hot team and we can lose on just about any given night to any team, as we saw us flirting with tonight.

5. It’s time for Plav to lose his starting spot, Nkamhoua, Aidoo & even Awaka continue to outplay him and he’s essentially starting and playing 4-5 minutes a half and that’s it. We’ve started slow in quite a few games and I’m not sure it’s a total coincidence as to what the starting 5 is. I don’t much care if it’s Aidoo, or going small, but I just feel pretty strongly that it shouldn’t be Plavsic at this point.

6. We move to 11-2(1-0), I said last week we really needed to try and take advantage of our opening schedule and start out 4-0, we got the 1st one tonight. Projections had us at 26-5(15-3) and winning your opening road game will only strengthen those projections, feels good to get that first SEC win out of the way and the fact it was on the road is even sweeter. We get a nice little break and then host Mississippi State at home, as tough as it is to win on the road you gotta make sure to protect your home, let’s get the W and start SEC play 2-0.

GBO!!!!

I will be happy to agree and disagree on 5. Both Aidoo and Awaka have had great games and portions of games recently. They no doubt are the future - but a case can be made for going with Plav and even starting Plav to establish some muscle and inside presence early on. All 3 can probably help you, but when option 2 and 3 are getting double figure rebounds and blocking 3 or 4 shots I agree a strong case can be made for more minutes which is exactly what we saw against Ole Miss. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think with this group different guys are going to key wins both in the front and back courts. You never know from day to day who is going to play great and who is going to disappear or shoot abysmally. When you only have one guy that makes a 3, that guy gets shadowed or a lot of attention.

Rebounds per 40 minutes:

#1) Awaka - 21.6
#2) Aidoo - 12.5
#3) Plavsic - 11.9
#4) JJJ - 9.6

I will say that Awaka seems to have a gift for positioning and getting rebounds. He is thick bodied, but he really has a feel for where the rebound is going to be and where he needs to position himself.

Only one of those is a natural 4, though.
I think Phillips is as much a college 4 as he is a 3 in todays game…I’ve not said he can’t/shouldn’t rebound a bit better, but if ON’s mostly going to play 4 for us then expectation of his numbers should be similar to other 4’s, not Awaka or Aidoo. He’s also a better shooter from 3 than Phillips or Mashack to this point I would say, and also from 2.

Oooooh..., yeah, I disagree. He's about 25-30 lbs shy of a college PF, IMO. He weighs south of 200 lbs. He plays so much more like a SF, and his skill-set is very much that of a SF, though one who needs to improve his outside shot and ability to finish in traffic and at the rim (the last of which is ever more important for him if he's believed to be a PF).

And then Mashack is nowhere near a PF.

Josiah, the guy we all claim is our small ball 4 and wanted more of us 2” shorter and 10lbs heavier than Phillips. You can look across college basketball and find quite a few 4’s who are 6’7”-6’8” ~200lbs, in fact I would suggest it’s pretty common.

Not saying Mashack is a PF, but he absolutely has played some 4 for us.

Playing the same position shouldn't equate to similar expectations. Mashack and Nkamhoua shouldn't be expected to produce the same level of production simply because one of them is being forced to play out of position. That's way too simplistic and lacks any sort of context.

That isn't really the point, though. The point is you're expecting similar production from a natural 4 and a couple guys playing out of position. Just because there are guys playing the 4 at similar size across the country doesn't mean we should expect a natural 4 to play down to the production level of guys not playing their natural position.

I stated Mashack to an extent, not total apples to apples, but I don’t think Phillips is a stretch.

My point by that is that Phillips is very much natural 4 imo, in todays game…if majority of 4’s in P5 are around that size doesn’t that mean that’s just what it is and not that it’s undersized or out of position? James is 6’6” and does very well rebounding the ball…

I think that downplays the 1", 40 lbs, and 3.5-year age difference that Nkamhoua has over Phillips, though. It just feels like you're trying to make the comparison too simple. And just because Phillips has a physical profile that can be viewed as an unconventional PF, it still isn't his natural position, whereas it is Nkamhoua's.
