Butch Jones blaming negativity surrounding his program on the Tennessee fanbase

On a side note, it's interesting how he perceives his role at Alabama. He was just an analyst, with a $35K per year salary. Even Saban referred to it as being that of a "glorified intern." However, Butch includes his time there as having "been in the SEC ... ," .... as though, he was an actual staff member.

As far as Tennessee's fan base having a vested interest in Arkansas State is concerned (Butch called it 'invested'), we care only to the extent that it makes us laugh. It just so happens that 73-0 is pretty funny.

Honestly, I feel bad for Arky State fans and alums for having to endure this guy. They don’t deserve that in the least.

The sooner they run him out of town, the better. I doubt there’s high schools that would take this guys brand of “coaching” and sleep at night.

Butch and Pruitt are the two most ridiculous hires and the fact they were back to back really just baffles the mind. Saying a prayer of thanks for Plowman and Boyd getting us out of that spiral to the bottom with no floor.

Individual assignments, Individuals, leadership reps, mental reps....

Even Butch's coach speak colloquialisms he used with the media were embarrassing. I honestly think Butch is dumb enough to think he sounded smart.

I'm A-OK with our punter situation because after Heupel gave a little coach speak he said "He’s gonna be a really good player, . . . we believe he’ll continue to get better." Had Heupel babbled on about making sure our punter knows his 'individual assignments" and gets his 'mental reps' in, I'd be more concerned.
I think the one that got under my skin the worst was "The fine details of playing winning football". He worried about sleep studies while his teams couldn't execute the fundamentals consistently.

I think he focused on being a big shot that came up with some great innovation. He wanted a "name".

I do feel sorry for him in a way. Multiple schools have now hired him into a role that he's convinced he's good at... and he isn't.

" Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar, you're gonna go far
You're gonna fly, you're never gonna die
You're gonna make it if you try, they're gonna love you"
Pink Floyd references, even in a Butch Jones thread, will always get a like from me. ;)

Good post. I'm not sure what the "right" role could be in football for Jones. If he has a good manager then he shouldn't need the money. He's not humble enough to become a recruiting reporter or something like that. I don't think anyone would like him as a broadcaster.

Pruitt at least was a competent coach of the game. He knew how to teach defense. He sucked at most other things but he had that.

He didn't keep Kamara on the bench. Should have used him more, but isn't like he didn't play.

Kamara wins the Heisman, or at the very least is invited to NYC, if he's here in 2022.
Hurd got 170 more touches than AK in 2015 (277 to 107).

24 vs 4 against OK
28 vs 5 at Florduh
21 vs 7 at Georgia
18 vs 5 at Bummer

It's the same for the whole season. In fact the only game where AK got anywhere close to double digit touches was mop-up duty (BG, UNT, Vandy, Northwestern). Meanwhile Jalen Averaged 21 a game. That's a significant difference and gross mismanagement of personnel. No wonder Jalen was tired of his crap. He literally rode him the whole season.

If Saban would be honest then Butch wouldn't like him either. Here's the real scoop:

When Georgia played Alabama for the NC in January 2018, it was a hard-fought game. In OT, the Georgia fans thought they were about ready to grab the crown when they sacked Tua for a 16-yard loss. But we all remember the second and 16 play - Tua hits Smith for the game winning, national championship wining catch. Although he was crushed, Kirby did the traditional handshake. He told Nic, "Great game but were gonna get you next time." NIc just laughted and told Kirby, "You ain't never gonna best us! Hell, I'll hire that loser Butch Jones and still beat you guys."

And that's how Butch was hired at Alabama.

Butch smoked that cigar because he was scared of those big football players. He was hurting inside that UT lost.

Butch: “I don’t pay attention to that stuff”.

Also Butch: Entirely aware of what is being said and who is saying it.
Yep, and he said there isn’t anything he hasn’t seen with his time in the SEC.

When (before now) did he look up at the scoreboard and see that his team was on the wrong end of 73-0?

I love Arkansas State as a program and i feel terrible for the players and fans. This is all on an absolutely incompetent AD. They didn’t just hire this clown, they actually EXTENDED him last summer

You know, this ^
Don’t blame him for celebrating the win with the players. But he could have politely declined the cigar and shunned the cameras. Of course in his defense, whenever I have been let go by an employer, i have fantasized about what it would be like to rub their faces in it down the road.

The negativity around Arkansas State is that their coach was crying on the sidelines because of a loss.

He's a grown a$$ man. He could cry if they won a Natty. He could cry if it was his last day coaching. He could cry if a player was seriously injured on the field.

He's crying over a lost football game like a 10yo. That will bring some negativity to your program.

I never said he got the same number of touches. I said he didn't ride the bench.

He cried when Josh Dobbs threw the Hobbnail boot. I thought it was embarrassing. Ever seen Saban cry? Seen him whine, but not cry.

Butch needs to resign!! He is not a good coach!!
Ain’t happening - he will never resign and forfeit any amount of buyout he could milk from Arkansas St. They need to find a way to fire him for cause so they don’t owe him anything!

4-5 touches a game is riding the bench in my book.
There were only 2-3 games in his entire career here where he got that few touches in a game, and a couple of those were due to injury.

He was under-used, no argument there, but that's exaggerated, revisionist history to suggest that he hardly ever played. He had an average of 11 touches/game in 2015 and 2016. It should have been double that, agreed. But he didn't consistently get 4-5 a game.

He cried because he tore up his knee when he jumped up after the catch. So he immediately contrived an emotional scene on one knee to cover up the initial knee pain from his awkward and embarrassing (to him) landing. That’s my theory.

Didn’t Urban Meyer cry on the sideline after losing a game in 2005? And didn’t Tim Tebow cry after every loss?

You're making my point about whether Butch has the toughness to remain a coach. Urban "gets sick" when the pressure comes and Tebow, physically gifted, lacked the maturity to realize where his NFL career could've been until too late....... and who had a "soft spot" for Tebow and uselessly let him show everyone he couldn't learn to be a tight end? That old softy Urban right before he got his hand caught in the Blondie jar.

Coaching requires toughness. You don't squat down on the sidelines during your first game because you're getting your face kicked in.

Not sure what caused Butch to cry, but there were days when he made me cry. JG too.

Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow won multiple national championships. They also cried when they lost. You can be a great coach or a great player and still cry. That is all I was thinking.

I don’t think Butch Jones is a good coach. I have several reasons for that opinion, and none of those reasons include tears.
