I've got no idea. The fact that I said it is a pretty powerful question....not THE most powerful question, does in and of itself make your post a moot point. The word THE in this case changes the meaning of the statement quite a bit.

Now. The statement as I posted it is in fact a powerful question. Did I say anything beyond that? Did I say that I agreed with said statement? No.

What I said was it is a pretty powerful question. Which it is. Everyone is free to come up with their own reason why it's powerful. I just said it stuck with me through the years. Personally, I agree with you. It's a question based in fear. It is still a question that most if not all people have asked themselves, regardless of religion (atheist included) at some point in their life, in some form or another.

:hi:

I believe the question serves better to the faithful than the non-faithful.
To the true believers, it is an ultimate answer for "what if you're mistaken". Truth be told, believers have lost nothing if they are. To live a life by a moral code rooted in doing right by others and helping your fellow man, would be rewarding all to itself.

The fear of punishment alluded to by Mustafa, does imply a harsher outcome for a non-believer, if they are mistaken.
The problem being that anyone that would declare belief for no other reason than fear of being wrong, would only be fooling everyone.., including themselves.
In your heart/mind (you choose) you either believe or you do not.

There is no answer in that verse or the remaining chapter.

There is. You're overlooking it. Baptism for the dead. Jesus came at the precise time in history he was supposed to come. There had to be provisions made for those before him and this is it.

His ministry is proxy for us and our ministry is proxy for them.

You do realize The basis of Christianity is the new covenant with Jesus Christ was fulfilled with his death. meaning that the old ways of the Abrahamic laws were no longer needed. Just throwing this out there for your pretentious cherry picking of scripture.

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.

What about those after him that did not know of the gospel?

A lot of stuff in the bible. If, you're going to believe some of it, you have to believe all of it. You can't cherry pick to suit your needs.

The general rule of Christianity is that after the covenant, the old ways were lost.

Not all adhere to this.

This got deep since last time I checked in.

It often does as the "liberal scum suckers" and "foolish fairytale Bible Thumpers" kind of posters start to weed out.
On the outskirts of every angry mob, you will usually find respectful, intelligent and thought-provoking minds.

Agreed, this thread went from dumpster fire to interesting after a few pages.

Not necessarily all of the old ways. Just whatever the law of Moses had corrupted. The early church couldn't walk more than so many steps on Sunday or else they would break the sabbath. People couldn't place an egg on a hearth because it might cook and then you broke the sabbath.

Most of these rules were created/added by local leaders because there wasn't a prophet on the earth to straighten out the people's questions and interpret the scriptures they had up to that point.

And by thought provoking you mean being neutral? Not speaking your belief? Debate and disagreements are the cornerstone of all good message boards.

But, as I was taught, basically everything before the Gospels was wiped clean, so to speak, and not followed. Then the Church of St. Peter, as the inheritor of the Gospel, continued.
