Butch says "Kickoffs to be eliminated"

Five people actually liked this? Its football, players know its a violent sport and know what they're getting into. They're not being misled. I would tell you to just take up sewing or knitting but you may prick yourself and see blood.

Isn't that pretty much the tact that boxing took as the sport went in the crapper in the 80s and 90s?

Again, people act like changing the rules in football is a new, PC thing and it's just not.

Our lust for blood should never outweigh the safety and longevity of the players on the field. If giving up kickoffs saves players from a broken neck, chronic concussion syndrome, or early onset dementia, then we must put aside personal desire for catharsis and do what is best for them.

They're not animals bred for our pleasure, they're human beings. Maybe we should treat them as such.

The players are not gladiators or pit bulls that are controlled to fight. They are free to choose to play this game. The very thrill of rough physical contact and fear of what could happen, or lust for blood as you call it, are what drive a lot of these men to continue to play. It is an error to blame this on the fans when the players are what drives this hunger, which is a very part of the nature of many men.

Part of being human is free will and self-determination, no?

Change the field to sand?

Limit the running start to 3-5 yards.

Take away the running start altogether and make everybody stand at the kick line until the ball is away.

Kickoff from the 35 or 40 to shorten the field.
etc, etc, etc.

Maybe we can just change the kickoff to a combination of a faceoff and tip-off. Both teams gather in a big circle at the 50, the ref throws the ball into the middle, waits a minute and starts digging through the dogpile.

Or -- maybe we keep the kickoff but have the receiving team line up alongside the kicking team. The ball gets booted down the field and the race is on!

Sounds to dangerous. I say just have a pregame hide n go seek and the winner gets the ball.

You're right.

I'm sure there were people who didnt like the changes made back in the 20's, 30's, ect...

Right now I'm one of those. Leave our dang game alone.

Is that you Momma?

Football is a violent sport. It is supposed to be violent. It is essentially a substitute for warfare and a place to practice the martial virtues. By your reasoning we should not play it at all because someone can always get hurt no matter how we change the rules. The only way to prevent broken necks, concussions etc... is not to play at all.

No, the players aren't animals. They are thinking, breathing human beings who can examine the risks and rewards for themselves and who do not need you to put them in a pretty little cage and tie bows in their hair --- for what you believe to be their own good no less! They are men damnit! Men do dangerous things. It is in their nature. It is what they are. I know our society frowns upon men and their pursuits... and wants to ban anything men like in favor of what women like... but there are consequences to that.

If we continue with the feminization of our culture we will eventually be supplanted by a healthier, stronger one either through warfare or assimilation because no culture can survive if it takes no risks and does not allow its males to harden themselves by risking injury in various pursuits. And football, while dangerous, is also very rewarding. You can kill yourself rock climbing but no one is going to offer you a free education or pay you millions to do it. You seem to think men would sit around knitting were they denied the opportunity to test themselves one against the other on the gridiron. I guarantee you that is not the case.

We box, we practice martial arts, we hunt, explore and climb in part because all of these things are dangerous. We ride motorcycles and race... and by God Almighty we play some damn football when we like. We even play rugby which is essentially one, long, repetitive kick-off after another. I am sorry that offends you but there it is. We are not all women and we are NOT animals to be put in a gilded cage and kept from all harm. Nor are we stuffed animals to be set upon your bed and dressed in pretty things. We are warriors, and explorers and farmers and firemen who stand ready to rush into the blaze... and we used to be fathers before the welfare state supplanted us and the laws made it impossible to marry without risking everything we are or would ever be.

So yeah, kickoffs are dangerous... so what of it?

in 15 years, soccer is going to be a pretty big sport on America. watered down football may contribute even more to that.

They have been saying that about soccer for years 15 years from now they will probably be saying the same thing. Soccer is probably as big as its going get in this Country.
