I think Shrout is a decent 3* QB recruit, that certainly has untapped potential(98% of 3* QB recruits do tho). But I still just don't understand the decision to tell Penix that he probly won't fit in to the new staff's gameplan. Penix looked just as good - IF NOT BETTER - on his scouting tape than JT Shrout does. Penix may possibly be the 1 of the 2 that develops into the better SEC QB. So why push him out, just to go chase and hope to flip another 3* QB recruit? I'm not an SEC coach, so I assume Jeremy Pruitt and Tyson Helton surely know better than me........but it just seems like a pointless hassle, when we ALREADY HAD A GOOD QB PROSPECT FIRMLY COMMITTED! Craziness. I woulda been perfectly happy keeping Penix. And then swing for the fences the rest of the recruiting periods and go after a high 4* and try to flip one to be "the guy", and Penix coulda ended up as solid depth regardless. Shrout looks decent in his film. Even tho, I really don't like the TD to INT ration in his small sample size. Those aren't good numbers on the INTS no matter where you're at. I'm sure he's a decent QB that Helton can get production out of. But why turn away Penix just to chase? Oh well. I'm sure this staff will lock up at least 1 decent QB recruit. Guarantano still has a few yrs to run the show tho, so the new staff has time. No rush. They have this class AND next class to land the heir to Guarantano. UT has always been in the conversation for a "Top QB" every recruiting cycle since i can remember. The last few yrs have been subpar, but I truly believe that UT and the tradition itself is good enuf to pull in atleast 1 solid QB each class. Always going to get a kid that wants the shot to take over and be the starting QB for the Tennessee Vols. So hopefully Helton and Pruitt start pulling a true stud QB every couple of yrs. We are going in the right direction to get back to that point again. We're not too far gone from those good days. They're comin back soon. I've got faith.
Shrout will play circles around Pennix imo. Sorry, just don't see how you see that they are even close.

After the staff letting Penix go, I don't see how Guarantano fits in either. He is far from a pro style QB. Hopefully its Mcbride or Dormady next year.
Sadly, Guarantano seems far from a duel threat, too. I feel like he has talent, I just feel like the system has to be perfectly tailored to him for the offense to be successful. Butch obviously didn't do that, and it doesn't really seem like the Pruitt offensive staff would either.

What kind of dumb bs is this? What makes JG the one you single out as "not pro style?"
Out of the three McBride is the best scrambler and worst passer by far. If anyone doesn't fit its him.
Guarantano was the best passer by far. Doesn't scramble much. Highest ypa, completion %, and best td/int ratio. he is the best pro style qb we have.
How is he far from a pro style when you think Mc Bride fits?
Is it McBride's 42.5% or his 3.8 ypa that make you think he can be a pro style qb?Compared to JG's 62% and 7.17 ypa.
Hopefully the coaches aren't dumb and go with our highly rated qb that was obviously the best qb we have. He was on fire the last month of the season.
i think you give either of these qb's an offensive line, we might be fairly surprised at how quickly they improve. both have good arms. and both are athletic...enough.
and neither has to be Josh Dobbs athletically to be successful.
that td stat would be pretty good for one game. Four games? Pathetic.
I agree, but pocket presence was still a glaring weakness in JG's game. He has to improve on that individually, regardless of how much the line play improves next year. Hopefully, the playcalling will improve, also.
I'm not sold on Gaurantono yet either, especially his decision making, but he nor the other quarterbacks were dealt good cards with all the injuries to the WR's and OL, the pathetic middle offense of Butch Jones, and the glaring lack of coaching. So I certainly expect to see a great deal of improvement this spring and fall.

i agree, there were things he just didn't see. part of that is just being a RS fr. the other part is things broke down around him so fast sometimes...he didn't really have a chance.
the former can be taught. the latter gets fixed by fixing the things around the qb....either by scheming around the instant pressure, or getting better up front.
and we need to do both.
Let's not have a peeing match arguing about who is the better QB. They both leave a lot to be desired. CJP will put in who he thinks is the best one. I'd say no position is a lock, and each will be evaluated, and the best athletes will be placed in the starting roles. Normady will be a senior, Guarantano a Junior, McBride a sophomore, each with some game experience now. Give any one of these boys some protection and establish a smash-mouth running game, I believe all three could be successful at the QB position. I hope we can pull in the recruits on the OL, because like CJP said, "it all starts in the trenches." Aight?!
Don't worry about "king". He thinks JG walks on water and will never see any flaw he has. He made a career our of falsely trashing QD.
JG has great arm talent. He isn't really a "dual threat" QB. Not much of a runner. Mobile... but not someone likely to become a big part of the run game. His problems are above the shoulders. He was only able to run a limited portion of the old system even at the end of his 2nd season in the program. Whether he struggles in that regard or just hasn't had the dedication, he was beaten out by QD in spite of Jones' desire to hand him the job because he trailed so badly in knowing the playbook. He also hasn't shown an ability to make pre or post snap reads. He also shows a lack of maturity that hurts his ability to lead the team.
ALL of this becomes even more important if they move back toward a more pro-style O.
QD made mistakes with the ball trying to play in Jones' system with receivers who often didn't do their jobs or else didn't know what to do. He isn't as mobile as JG. He doesn't have the pure arm talent that JG has though he has plenty of arm. He by far and away demonstrated the most mastery of reads and playbook knowledge. By every account I've seen, QD has a good attitude and is a respected leader of the team.
Outside of an emergency, McBride probably won't play again at UT. He's not a pro-style QB and will be recruited over. I would not be surprised at all if he recognizes this and leaves before next August.
