I was super excited when I heard he was coming, Shrout said of Chryst. I had a buddy that I went to high school with who actually played at Stanford with him, and I got to ask him a little bit about him. I mean, obviously, the guys coming from a great school like Stanford, so he's smart and he's been able to run a pro-style offense for four years. Im going to pick his brain and learn as much from him as I can.
I mean, obviously, Keller's coming in, so me and him will be a little bit behind Jarrett and Will, because theyve had a month or two on us for learning the system and getting some practices in there, Shrout said. But I think were both just going to have to come in there and put our head down and get to work, and whatever happens, happens. I mean, I'm going to be a good teammate first with whoever wins the job. Hopefully it's me, but if that doesn't happen, Ill be there to support our guys and just get ready to play some football.
He said he definitely needs to improve on his decision-making to cut down on the interceptions he threw last year, which came from trying to force way too many balls. And then part of its also trying to keep my team in games when we were down and trying to just get us back in the game, Shrout said of his high interception total. I think all of it just kind of comes back to the mental part of the game, just making better decisions and taking care of the ball better.
I think Im very mechanically sound. I think I'm a great leader, so hopefully I can go out there, be a leader right away and help contribute in whatever way the coaching staff is asking me to do, he said. I think I'm very accurate. I think I have a strong arm, and I'll be able to learn from a great coach like (offensive coordinator Tyson) Helton about the Xs and Os of football and get even better.
